"Shortly after four o'clock on the afternoon of April 14, 1944, the explosive-laden Liberty ship Fort Stikine disintegrated in two devastating explosions alongside Berth No. 1 in the Victoria Dock, Bombay. The destruction was appalling. Within days reports showed at least 350 dead, 1,800 injured and 50,000 made homeless. The damage wasestimated at 24 million with ten ships totalling 34,600 tons destroyed or declared a total loss" (p. 1).
