Illustrated. 8vo, blue printed stapled card covers. ďAt Castle Frederick, [Upper Falmouth, Hants County] in central Nova Scotia, an observatory was erected in 1765. Initially it was used as astation for the checking of surveying instruments; however, in 1767 and ag ain in 1769 it was equipped with some some of the best astronomical instruments from the Dollonds of London. Conceived by Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres, one of the most remarkable individuals of the eighteenth cntury, andeventually but reluctantly paid tor by the British Admiralty, this buildin g merits consideration as possibly the earliest, optically equipped, astronomical observatory in the Western Hemisphere.
