Pp (2),-20 leaves + 5 leaves of tables, all printed on one side only. 4to, corner stapled sheets. A preliminary draft of a paper to be read at the meetings of theSociety for the Scientific Study of Religion, San Francisco, October, 1973 . “Why is it that Pictou County has produced such a disproportionately large number of eminent Canadians by comparison to other counties in Nova Scotia? Pictonians are predominantly Scots Presbyterians, but so are the populations of other counties which have produced far fewer notables. Similarly, Pictou County was not alone in the early development of institutions of higher education. The explanation of Pictou!s productivity of prominent people must be sought elsewhere. There is one other feature which distinguishes Pictou County from others - its history of intense religious conflict. The thesis of this paper is that a latent function of this religious conflict wasthe production of an environment which nurtured an unusually high number o f notables.” (Abstract).
