Sailing is [sic] local waters was never easy and it grew progressively more difficult as the South Channel of the Ribble Estuary silted up. For all that, the Club thrived before the First World War. Setbacks during the inter-war years might have led to closure but the Club survived and since 1945 lt has re-emerged with great success. Although sea-sailing off Southport Pier has declined, the Marine Lake is now a focus for dinghy sailing, with the annual 24-Hour Race firmly established as a major event in the British yachting calendar. - from the dj.
