PAST, Elena. Methods of Murder : Beccarian Introspection & Lombrosian Vivisection in Italian Crime Fiction. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, (2012). First Printing. Pp. (6),[vii]-x,(2),[3]-353,(5). 8vo, black cloth with silver lettering to spine. "'Methods of Murder' rewrites the frame of analysis for Italian crime fiction by examining Cesare Beccaria's 'On Crimes andPunishments' and Cesare Lombroso's 'Criminal Man'. These two decisive work s in the history of criminology, the former written during the Enlightenment and the latter a positivist text, paint vastly different portraits of thecriminal. Beccaria's work posits the problem of criminality as a judicial one, and the criminal figure that emerges is introspective and bodiless. Lombroso, on the other hand, seeks the roots of criminality in the body of the delinquent, and his science instead delves into the inner recesses of thebiological human subject. In this reconceptualization of Italian crime fic tion, Elena Past investigates canonical texts by Carlo Emilio Gadda and Leonardo Sciascia alongside novels by best-selling contemporary authors AndreaCamilleri, Carlo Lucarelli, and Gianrico Carofiglio, as well as films by D ario Argento. In doing so she raises the stakes for crime fiction by arguing that Beccarian and Lombrosian analyses bring to light critical aesthetic and ideological dynamics that drive these tales of crime." - from the dust jacket.
