LAMBERT, Wallace E., and G. Richard TUCKER. Bilingual Education of Children: The St. Lambert Experiment. (Rowley, Mass.) : Newbury House Publishers, Inc., (August 1972). First Printing. Pp (12),[1]-248. Tables. Index. 8vo, illustrated white card covers. The St. Lambert bilingual education experiment in Montreal, Canada, was begun because parents did not feel that the traditional language classes were successful in teaching their children French. This early immersion program had marked success: academic achievement, mot her tongue competency, and other areas of intellectual development were nothampered. By grade 7, children who had begun in the program not only perfo rmed better than peers who had been through English-only programs in vocabulary tests, reading, spelling, and language skills, but also performed at or above the level of their French-Canadian peers in most tests of French language skills. Attitudes towards French-Canadians also improved, as well asgeneral thinking skills, as a result of the bilingual program. Front cover reattached with clear tape, rubbed, edgeworn, else good. 50.00
