2 ABBOTT, Linda. Hull Home Fire. Paperback.
Flanker Press, St. John's, NF, 2013, ISBN:9781771172622
ABBOTT, Linda. The Hull Home Fire. St. John's: Flanker Press, (2013). Pp. (6),1-231,(3). 8vo, illustrated orange card covers with white lettering to spine. "Day after day, thousands of people passed by an unassuming, three-storey building on the corner of New Gower and Springdale streets in St. John's. Operated by the Hull family, the ground floor was rented to a commission merchant; the top two floors and annex building were used as a private hospital for aged and infirm patients. In the dead of winter, on February 10,1948, the simple lighting of a defective oil stove in the main building se t off a chain of events that burned the Hull Home and its Annex to the ground. When the smoke cleared, searchers found death in every room and hallway. In this gripping historical novel, Linda Abbott vividly recreates St. John's of the 1940s, exploring the details of the inferno, as well as the human side, of a tragedy that could have been avoided." - from the rear cover. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First American Edition. Pp 298. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt JA device to front board.

Krummes, Steamer Stories : An Annotated Bibliography of Steamship Fiction, 1845-2012 p. 7.

A novel.

"Good-natured, incompetent, friendly, and lustful - at sixty the crony of college students and high-living officials - Vasco Moscoso de Aragao laments that his life as the son of a wealthy merchant has brought him no rank, degree, or title. So - though Vasco has never made a sea voyage - a friend gets him a licence as a ship's captain. Moving to Periperi in the suburbs of Bahía, he takes up with relish the life of an honored, retired old sea dog surrounded by nautical instruments, sea-going uniforms, and listeners eager for his "reminiscences" of the oceans and exotic lands that he has visited. Vasco is so endlessly and colorfully inventive that only a few of his canniest neighbors begin to suspect the truth.

When the northbound good ship Ita comes into Bahía with her captain dead, Vasco - the only licenced captain in the area - is dragooned into completing her voyage up the coast to Belém as master (with the understanding that he will be free to call on the first mate for all important decisions). On the voyage, Vasco enjoys himselt, whiling away the time in social activities and in pursuing a lady passenger of forty, to whom he becomes engaged. But deceiving sailors turns out to be not so easy as dazzling landlubbers, and what t happens then and thereafter is almost (but not quite) beyond belief." - from the dj.

Cover photo by Zoe Lucas.

"Sable Island is the world's most mysterious and notorious sandbar, situated 160 kilometres off the shore of southeast Nova Scotia. The island is currently receiving much attention because of its new designation as a National Park. Known for centuries as 'The Graveyard of the Atlantic,' its forty-kilometre length has claimed over five hundred ships since the earliest adventurers and fishing vessels sailed to North America. Even today Sable presents serious problems to navigators. The home of the world's last herds of wild horses, the island is a fragile, shifting crescent of sand and grass whose beauty and violence has fascinated and inspired countless adventurers, writers, artists and scientists for over three hundred years.

Bruce Armstrong takes the reader on a personal journey to Sable. He brings to life the early shipwrecks, lifesaving establishments and settlement attempts that have marked the island's long and varied hisory. There are ghost stories, tales of exceptional bravery and first-hand imp[ressions of the island left by men and women such as Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Dorothea Dix and Alexander Graham Bell. Contemporary material about Sable is based on interviews with some of the people who lived in this lonely place as lifesavers, wireless operators, conservationists and scientific observers; their experiences contribute an immediate sense of Sable's spirit and power.

'Sable Island' is an imaginative and exciting journey to the world's northern Galapagos. It is also an eloquent plea for the preservation of a unique and timeless part of Nova Scotia. 'Sable Island' was awarded the Evelyn Richardson Prize, the pre-eminent award for non-fiction in Atlantic Canada." - from the rear cover.

ASPLER, Tony. Titanic : A Novel. Toronto : Doubleday Canada Limited, (1989). First Canadian Printing. Pp. (4),1-304,(4). 8vo, black cloth, silver lettering to spine.

Tony Aspler, OC (b. May 12, 1939, London, England).

" When J.P. Morgan and his fellow robber barons ruled America, display was all. In New York mansions along Fifth Avenue new money rubbed shoulders with the old and money could buy anything, including love. Across the ocean the Titanic symbolozed the aspirations of the newly rich and society flocked to become passengers on the world's most luxurious ocean liner. Set against a backdrop of wealth and privilege, Titanic is a story of obsession, greed, morality - and murder.

In another era, Henry Blexill might have become a champion boxer, but he was bound by the traditions of the England in which he was born. From infancy he was raised to serve Lord Rutherland at the ancestral home, Cumerworth hall. But when Lord Rutherland went bankrupt, Henry had no choice but to sail for the New World as butler to the American banker, Thaddeus Nugent Tarr." - from the dj.

The story traces the tale of Henry Blexill, forced into servitude under one of the nouveau riche "robber barons" of America, banker Thaddeus Nugent Tarr, and Henry's peering into his master's mysterious background, while both travel to America aboard the doomed liner.
