123 BODSWORTH, Fred Atonement of Ashley Morden. A novel. Second Printing in dustjacket.

(12),3-468,(2). 8vo, olive green cloth with dark green title block to spine, top edge dyed dark green. Fred Bodsworth (b. October 11, 1918, Port Burwell, Ontario - d. September 15, 2012, Toronto) was a Canadian journalist, naturalist, and author of severalnovels. "Ashley Morden, a Canadian scientist, had reluctantly agreed to wo rk on a government project. When the novel opens, he was on the way to his assignment, flying over the vast subarctic wilderness in a jet piloted by Wing Commander Ron Dorkett. During an ice storm, the engines failed; a crashwas inevitable. Ash had to parachute alone into the snow-covered lake coun try. There, in pain and delirium, he thought he was being taken care of by Margo, the girl he had loved so long ago. He relived the past that involvedRon and Margo, that took him again on the bombing raids over Germany and t o the fatal act that was to give Ron the chance to destroy him. Now, after years of dedicated research, Ash had made the discovery responsible for hisgoing on the hated mission and his meeting with Ron. When Ash returned to consciousness, he realized that it was not Margo who had found him. It was Lilka, a German girl who had been brought up in the isolated northland by her war-twisted father. Elusive and beautiful, she was as much a part of thewild as the animals she knew so well. As the relationship between Ash and Lilka changed from fear and dependency to love, she revealed to him the secret of the wilderness -- a secret that could change the world." - from the dustjacket. 128 BOLTON, Herbert Eugene. KINO, Eusebio Francisco Rim of Christendom : A Biography of Eusebio Francisco Kino, Pacific Coast Pioneer
Macmillan Company, New York, 1936,
BOLTON, Herbert Eugene. Rim of Christendom : A Biography of Eusebio Francisco Kino, Pacific Coast Pioneer. New York : The Macmillan Company, (November) 1936. Second Printing. Pp (6),vii-xiv,(4),3-644 + 12 leaves of plates + 8folding maps (some large). 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine. Dinges, (ed.), Arizona 100 : A Centennial Gathering of Essentia l Books on the Grand Canyon State, 9. "Eusebio Francisco Kino was the most picturesque missionary pioneer in all North America - explorerer, astronomer, cartographer, mission builder, ranchman, cattle king, and defender of the frontier. His biography is not merely the life story of a remarkable individual; it illuminates the culture history of a large part of the Western Hemisphere in its pioneer stages. Born it Italy, educated in Germany, sojourner in Spain and Mexico City, missionary and royal cosmographer in California, Kino was with the first expedition which ever reached the Pacific Oceanby crossing the Peninsula. This was in 1684, just when LaSalle landed his colony in Texas; when England annulled the charter of Massachussets and thereby raised a storm; when Philadelphia was three years old and Charleston was celebrating its fourteenth birthday. This California episode in Kino's romantic career closed with a pirate-chasing voyage on the Pacific to protect the treasure-laden Phillipine Galleon on its return from Manila to Mexico. For a quarter of a century Kino was the outstanding figure on the Sonora - Arizona - California frontier. A score of present-day towns and cities began their history as mission pueblos founded by him or directly under his influence. Over a vast area in the Southwest and adjacent Mexico, cattle ranching and the introduction of European cereals and fruits owe to him their beginnings. Wheat raising in Alta California, to give a single example, wasbegun with a handful of seed sent by Kino from Mexico across the Arizona d esert to a giant Yuma chieftain whom he had formerly visited on the Colorado River. Kino's maps of Western North America made him famous in Europe even in his day, and with or without acknowledgment they were copied there by cartographers for nearly a century after his death. His manuscripts now brought to light constitute by far the best contemporary historical record of the regions where he labored." - from the Preface. Contents : I. The Jesuits in New Spain. II. B.T. Batsford, Ltd., London, 1975, ISBN:0713430141
BRADLEY, J. [John] F.N. Civil War in Russia, 1917-1920. London and Sydney :B.T. Batsford Ltd, (1975). First Printing. Pp. (6),[7]-197,(3). 8vo, black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "For Russia the road from the Bolshevi k uprising against the Provisional Government to the establishment of the USSR proper was a hard one to travel. Not only was there the Red-White civilwar but preceding it and running parallel to some of its phases was extens ive Western diplomatic activity, as well as the military presence of the Czech Legion and the Japanese, plus partisans on both sides. In this widely researched account Dr Bradley has disentangled the political, military and diplomatic skeins on both sides, so that diplomatic activity between London,Paris and Berlin complements that between those capitals and Russia itself . A significant part of the book is the record of Lenin and Trotsky. The work is based on three important new sources of documentation: the Trotsky archive, together with other Bolshevik papers (notably the Smolensk archive);personal documents of the White leaders -- in particular the correspondenc e of Generals Wrangel and Deniken and the latter's diaries; most important of all, the declassified Western archives -- particularly those of France, Great Britain, Italy and the United States, backed up by those of Germany and Austria. For the first time it is thus possible to check conflicting Redand White versions of the Civil War against a third set of records. The re sult is a book of remarkable lucidity, which has a considerable bearing on the history of the First World War and on Great Power diplomatic activity of the period but above all on the foundation of the USSR." - from the dustjacket.
