July 3, 1928, London) is the pen name of Evelyn Ward-Thomas (Evelyn Bridgett Patricia Ward-Thomas). It was Nancy's birthday, and her millionaire lover, David Renwick, had planned a surprise weekend in the country. Nancy didn't know her destination. She didn't know she was about to come face to face with her past, her real identity, and thesecret that had haunted her since childhood. Nancy's story is of a great h ouse, a rich and powerful family, and a remarkable woman. Her grandmother, Alice, an American beauty, married the immensely wealthy banker Hugo Vandekar in the thirties, and found that marriage was only the beginning of a drama of love, hate, and jealousy that would span the next forty years. Now, coming back to Ashton, the house where she was born, Nancy must admit her real name and, with the help of the man she loves, attempt to solve the mystery surrounding her mother's death." "The nine Arab states of the Lower Gulf -- Bahrayn, Qatar and the seven member states of the United Arab Amirates -- were catapulted onto the international scene shortly after they received their full independence from Great Britain in 1971. The global energy situation ensures that they will continue to engage the attention of the outside world for some time to come. The majority of these states are oil producers, and they include some of the world's wealthiest societies in terms of income per capita; they also include some of the poorest. The problems and opportunities presented by these circumstances offer uniquechallenges to the governments and peoples of these states. In good and in bad times, even in times of economic recession, the port continues to be a hive of activity. The engines that drive this intensive port industry are the 'Naties'. These age-old corporations have survived all the political, social and economic turbulence that history has brought their way. Their inborn flexibilty has always enabled them to adapt to the most radical changes. Their vitality and dynamism have never reached such heights as in today's difficult climate. They have cut steadfastly through the turbulence of the economic recession and, despite teh general decline of the European ports, they continue to invest, with a firm belief in the future. No one who drives through the port can fail to remark their ubiquitousness on all the quays, in all the distributionzones, and at all the terminals." - from the foreword. 1248 APOSTLE, Richard BARRETT, Gene Emptying Their Nets : Small Capital and Rural industrialization in the NovaScotia Fishing Industry
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992, ISBN:0802068316
APOSTLE, Richard and Gene BARRETT. Emptying Their Nets : Small Capital and Rural industrialization in the Nova Scotia Fishing Industry. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, (1992). Pp (8),[ix]xvii,(5),[3]-396. Tables. Maps.8vo, card covers. Also with contributions by Pauline Barber, Kevin J. Barr ett, Anthony Davis, Marie Giasson, Leonard Kasdan, Leigh Mazany and Lawrence Willett. "The day of the independent fisher is done, according to conventional wisdom. There is a widespread conviction today that the survival of small capital in the fishing industry is anachronistic or, at best, exceptjonal, and therefore relatively unimportant in the grander scheme of things. Richard Apostle and Gene Barrett take a different view. They argue that thedifferentiated structure of the industry, while rooted in a number of reso urce-centred conditions, stems from a range of socioeconomic factors which the fishery shares with other industrial sectors. It is the overall constellation of events and forces that continually regenerates a. structural basis for small capital and frustrates the centralization ana concentration of capital. They suggest mat a variety of types ot small capital must bc distinguished, each with particular internal structures - for example, relationsto the harvesting sector, large-scale capital, and the market. While the c oastal zone fishery is vital to the small capital processing sector, family-based organization, intermediate technology, surplus labour, and communitystructures are central to this structure as well. They argue as well that a populist ideology rooted in individualism and free enterprise emanates from this structure and represents its major weak point in terms of concertedaction during times of crisis. The culmination of a six-year research proj ect, this work incorporates primary research data collected through surveysof plant managers, fishers, plant workers and brokers, four community stud ies, and financial analysis of fish plant operations. It identifies variousstrands and patterns that make up the fabric of rural community, revealing the complex interconnections among household, class, gender, and community and the structuring of economy and society.." (Abstract). Contents : 1. A theoretical overview (by Richard Apostle and Gene Barrett). 2. Mercantile and industrial development to 1945 (by Gene Barrett). 3. "This is a study of Northern Norway and Atlantic Canada, two regions experiencing a severe crisis due to overexploitation of fisheries resources. The work of a group of researchers from Canada, Norway, and the United States, it examines the implications of common market integration, privatized resource management, and small business development policies for fishery-dependant communities in terms of long-term sustainability and participatory democracy. The book is brokeninto three sections: an examination of the economic and institutional hist ory of the fisheries in Norway and Atlantic Canada, a study of the regulatory regimes used in the fisheries of these two regions, and an analysis of reactions in three communities, two in Canada [Sambro, Nova Scotia and Fogo Island, Newfoundland] and one in Norway [Bugoynes], to the decline and collapse of fish stocks. Comparative, multidisciplinary, and multinational in approach, it is a major contribution to the literature on fishing regulations, the role of the state, and resource development in the North Atlantic." -from the dustjacket.
