Double Column. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "'It is fitting that the names of David Dickson and James Fergusson should appear together in an expository volume. The two men. who belonged to what Dr John MacLeod termed 'the Second Reformation galaxy' in Scotland, collaborated with others in the production of 'as valuable a legacy of practical exegesis as has come down from the Puritan age.' The initial impetus, under God, came from Dickson (1583-1662) who exercised a highly successful ministry at Irvine in Ayrshire. So popular was his expository preaching that his hearers wrote down verbatim all that was possible and later circulated the transcriptions among their friends and acquaintances. In the outcome, Dickson, sensing the need for the printing of plain and 'handy expositions ot Scripture, initiated a project designed 'to bring to the common man the ripe fruit of academic work'. In other words Dickson s expositions acted as a catalyst. His first effort, A Short Explanation of 'the Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews (1635), demonstrated the style of his preaching and set the pattern for the series His method was to give a summary of each part of the Epistle in turn, followed by a doctrinal and practical exposition of its teachings. The Hebrews volume was issued with the hope that 'any success attending this "piece of hard meat" would encourage others to attempt less difficult Scripture.' Among the tirst to be encouraged was James Fergusson (1621-1667) a minister at Kilwinning, not far from Irvine. After 'muchintreaty' he prepared A rief Exposition of Philippians and Colossians, pub lished 'n 1656. Expositions of Galatians and Ephesians followed in 1659; a similar work on the two Thessalonian Epistles was published posthumously (1674). Together w'ith Dickson on Hebrews the six were republished in Ward's Library of Standard Divinity in 1850. The present volume is a orint of thatedition." (from the dj). 17412 FERNALD, John WORSLEY, John Destroyer from America. 1st US in dj
Macmillan Company, New York , 1942,
FERNALD, John. Destroyer from America. New York : The Macmillan Company, 1942. First Printing. Pp [i]-vi,[1]-155,(3). 8vo, blue cloth, red lettering to spine. A fictional story about Royal Navy life on a ex-American destroyerin Worl d War II. "One of those fifty destroyers which the United States s ent to Britain is heroine of this out-of-the-ordinary tale of adventure convoying on the high seas. For many months Lieutenant Fernald, R.N.V.R., navigated the Porchester, an unbeautiful and inconvenient veteran whose smokestacks leaked, and whose machinery needed overhauling badly. Her crew, made up partly of regular men, partly of civilians who were once farmers, accountants, postmen, bricklayers (the author was in the theatre), tended to look on heroism as "flapdoodle," even to be scared when they thought about it. Thus they, and the old Porchester who gradually earned their love and respect, are more vivid and individual than fictional characters could ever be. For months al is quiet; the navigator enjoys working out problems, the doctor gets over being seasick, the officers listen to music on the Berlin radio. Suddenly the enemy strikes. And the Porchester's crew sinks a submarine, shoots down a plane - and entirely forgets to be afraid. This is a story ofheroes of today - men from every sort of calling, using whatever rough wea pons are at hand for the life of their country, heedless of personal praiseor glory." - from the dj. FERNANDEZ, Benedict J. In Opposition : Images of American Dissent in the Sixties. Preface by Aryeh Neier. New York: Da Capo Press, 1968. First Paperback Printing. Pp. (164). Unpaginated. Illustrated in black and white, with more than 100 photos. Large square 8vo, illustrated black card covers with white lettering to front cover and spine. "'In Opposition' is a book of photographgs of Americans. They are not 'the great majority of Americans, the forgottne Americans, the non-shouteres, the non-demonstrators' mentioned by Richard Nixon in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. To the contrary, they are Americans caught in action in the streets, Americans using signs, flags, buttons, masks, and most of all, their own bodies, to capture public attention and express a point of view; and if they areremembered today, it is only because as minorities, they were forgotten in the past. [...] Ultimately, the photographs in 'In Opposition' present a c ompassionate, honest, and striking visual record of protest in the 1960's. Black demonstrators for equal rights are juxtaposed with white supporters -- and white opponents; peace marchers confront advocates of war; while the even smaller minorities who fight for the rights of the tenant, the landlord, the homosexual, the drug usuer, are shown pressing their own beliefs." -from the rear cover. FERNANDEZ-ARMESTO, Felipe. The Canary Islands after the Conquest : The Making of a Colonial Society in the Early Sixteenth Century. Oxford : ClarendonPress, 1982. First Printing. Pp. (5),[vi]-ix,(5),[1]-244,(2). With four ma ps to text. 8vo, black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. A volume in the Oxford Historical Monographs series. "This book is important for historiansof the Spanish monarchy, comparative colonial history, 'frontier societies ', commerce, race relations, and the late medieval and early modern periodsin general. The author portrays the life, work, and institutions of an ear ly Atlantic colonial society during the period of intensive settlement in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The provenance of the settlers, their distribution, economic activities, (agronomy, irrigation, and trade), political organization, contacts with the indigenous people, and moral and devotional life are described in turn. Extensive use is made of notarial archives, which offer a great wealth of detailed evidence about individual colonists at every social level. The book is a significant contribution towards the comparative study of European overseas colonization in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The Canaries are particularly important in this connection, and the author identifies elements of continuity and discontinuity with other areas. The islands are seen not only to have a place in a long history of formation and development of colonial societies and government, but also to present unique features, moulded by the peculiarities of the Canarian experience and environment." - from the dustjacket. FERRARS, Elizabeth. The Seven Sleepers. London : Collins, (1970). First Edition. Pp (4), 5-222, (2). 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. A volumein the The Crime Club series. "If evidence seems about to come to light th at the late Professor Garvie-Brown of Edinburgh University had murdered seven wives, four of whom he had married bigamously, enriching himself by eachmarriage and dying regarded by his colleagues as a wonderful old man, what ought his descendants to do about it? What, particularly, ought they to do when the professor's eighth wife, who, astonishingly, survived him, shows signs of developing a conscience and of feeling that they should all do something for an obscure young man in London called Luke Latimer, who, she hasdiscovered, is the sole surviving grandson of one of the bigamous wives? L uke himself wants nobody to do anything for him. He is in a job he likes and he wants to be left in peace to get on with it. He has not the slightest inclination to blackmail or in any way to bother his wealthy relations, among whom are a High Court judge, a doctor and another professor. But how arethey to be sure of that? They only know that if the truth were to become p ublicly known, they would all be ruined. Their fears of this, their fears of what Luke perhaps might do to them, together with the devious activities of a certain private detective, Gilbert Arne, draw Luke helplessly to Edinburgh, into their lives and their problems, and to the scene of an eighth murder. Elizabeth Ferrars has never displayed to better effect her well-knownskill in characterization and suspense." -- from dust jacket. Very good in rubbed, edgeworn priceclipped dustjacket. 18.00

"Cecily Lightwood was giving a party toher friends, mainly drawn from the literary and artistic world in which th e clever and talented Cecily moved. That night she was looking particularlyradiant as she received her guests. But somehow the party didn't seem comp lete. It was in danger indeed of falling rather flat. And all because of the absence of one man, Aubrey Ritter the playwright, who was Cecily's nearest neighbour, actually occupying the flat above. Where was Aubrey, who should have been the lion of the evening ? Murder Among Friends is a distinguished mystery story excellently told by Miss Elizabeth Ferrars, whose previoussuccesses have earned her a deservedly high reputation. She excels in the portrayal of her caretuliy observed characters, her racy dialogue, and not least in the ingenuity of her solution." (Abstract). (6),vii-xiii,(1),1-235,(7). 8vo, black cloth with gilt letteringto spine. A volume in the Studies in Military and Strategic History series . "This book demonstrates that Britain's foreign, financial and military policies were closely related during the 1920s because Britain needed to drawa balance between the military forces which seemed necessary to supp0rt it s strategic aims and that strength which it seemed able to afford. The author shows that the so-called ten-year rule and Treasury control over the fighting services did not begin significantly to affect British strategic policy until 1925. He argues that between 1919 and 1926 Britain did not follow a single strategic policy, but instead many different ones, and that they were not formulated in a static fashion but rather in a dynamic one. The book calls for a radical reassessment of historians' perceptions of this critical period. " (from the dj). Contents : 1. Jacques Ferron's stories are wonderful. Some are fantastic tall tales in which a bull turns into a lawyer, or a lonely Alberta cow's ghost longs for Quebec, or Ulysses comes back to Ithaca Corner, Ontario. Ferron writes metaphysical fables, sketches of urban life, political satire, portraits of men and women in all walks of life, and wry comedies, with great originality and a profound sympathy for the human condition. Coach House Quebec Translations, Toronto, 1977,
FERRON, Jacques. Quince Jam. Translated by Ray Ellenwood. (Toronto): Coach House Quebec Translations, (1977). Originally published in 1972 by Éditionspartipris under the title "Les confitures de coing". Pp. (8),9-262,(2). Ta ll 8vo, blue card covers with french flaps, white titles to front and spine. "This volume is the English equivalent of the 1971 Partipris edition including 'Les Confitures de coing' (Quince Jam) and three other texts: Papa Boss, the Appendix to Quince Jam, and Credit Due. 'Papa Boss' stands apart asFerron's sardonic vision of the annunciation of the new Messiah, son of Pa pa Boss, Lord of a firmament of high finance and technology, who will be born (of course) of a fallen nun in Quebec. The other works form a unit because they all deal with the problem of autonomy for Quebec and autonomy of the individual -- the author's sense of his own identity in his uncertain country. They are the assertive statements of a man devoted to his culture, antidotes to the public self-mortification of so many texts of the 'quiet revolution'. Beyond their obvious political relevance for Canadians, they explore, in the nebulous world between fiction and autobiographical essay, the relationship between each of us and the other. At once highly personal and general, these are the works of a prose artist unlike any on this continent." -from the rear cover. 17461 FETHERLING, Douglas Running Away to Sea : Round the World on a Tramp Freighter. First Edition in dustjacket
McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1998, ISBN:0771031157
FETHERLING, Douglas. Running Away to Sea : Round the World on a Tramp Freighter. (Toronto) : McClelland & Stewart, (1998). First Printing. Pp (10),1-245,(1). A few illustrations in the text. 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Douglas George Fetherling (b. January 1, 1949, Wheeling, West Virginia). "At a low point in his life, the prolific Canadian writer Douglas Fetherling sought to clear his head by taking the kind of trip that many of us dream about - going round the world on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him (and a handful of other travellers) some thirty thousand nautical miles, from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific, with a future as fragile as its past is romantic. There the ship, a converted Russian ice-breaker renamed The Pride of Great Yarmouth, traded at some of the most fabled - and some of the most disreputable - ports in the southern hemisphere. The return voyage, by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez, was just as memorable. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, Fetherlings narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Foreign Legionnaires of French Polynesia to the raskol gangs of Papua New Guinea. Most memorable perhaps are the men and women who continue to follow the millennia-old life of the sea. This is the world of Ordinaries and Able-Bodied Seamen, but also of hopeful young officer cadets to say nothing of, in this particular instance, a temperamental cook, a computer genius with a nose-ring, and a young Russian woman who believes herself the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. Fetherling captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramped quarters seem to exaggerate. But he also describes how the routine of loneliness or tranquillity is punctuated by moments of near-panic shipboard fires, furniture-smashing storms, even a brush with pirates in the Strait of Malacca. Running Away to Sea is literary travel-writing in the grand old tradition." - from the dj, which also carries a high recommendation from Bill Bryson. Chapters : 1. Taking Ship; 2. Panama; 3. Somewhere in the Pacific; 4. Polynesia; 5. Shipmates; 6. Suva to Santo; 7. Papua New Guinea: Rats and Butterfies; 8. Papua New Guinea: Volcanoes and Raskols; 9. FETHNEY, Michael. The Absurd and the Brave : CORB - The True Account of theBritish Government's World War II Evacuation of Children Overseas. Sussex, England : The Book Guild Ltd., (1990). First Edition. Pp (6),7-333,(3). Wi th many b&w photos and other illustrations in the text . 8vo [140 x 220 mm], blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Michael Fethney (b. circa 1931), himself a CORB child evacuated at age 9 from Bradford, was living in Harrogateat the time of puiblication. "In June 1940, the CORB scheme (Children's Ov erseas Reception Board) opened its doors for the evacuation of Britain's children abroad. Within three weeks the scheme was closed, flooded with applications from parents desperate to send their children to 'safety'. In this atmosphere of panic began one of the most extraordinay chapters of our wartime history. This is the whole story: the careful planning and amazing recklessness that placed children on poorly defended ships to run the gauntlet of the German navy, twice with disastrous results. When they eventually arrived at their destination, fortunes were equally mixed, some experiencing love and generosity from their host families while others found neglect and cruelty. When the war ended, the children returned to families that were strangers to pick up the threads of family life. For some children, CORB was the adventure of a lifetime, for others a psychological nightmare: Michael Fethney sums this up when he calls this 'a story of sorrow, human error, and absurdity - though also of inspiration, dedication, and human bravery'. (from the dj). Many of the children sent to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa&c. Contents : Foreword Lord Asa Briggs. Introduction : Making the CORB Story. 1. Seeds. 2. Birth. 3. FETZER, Glenn W. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry. Amsterdam– New York : Rodopi, 2004. First Edition. Chiasma 15. Pp [1]-158,(2). 8vo, illustrated blue and grey card covers. "The richness and diversity of poet ic voices in France since the mid-twentieth century sharpen the challenge of charting the poetic landscape in ways that are accessible and cohesive. Since poetry in France has long demonstrated a predisposition to philosophical questions. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry reads the work of six poets through the lens of the Pre-Socratics. The poets discussed range from the well-known - Jacques Dupin, André du Bouchet, Eugène Guillevic - to the lesser celebrated - Jean-Louis Chrétien, Céline Zins, and Emmanuel Hocquard. What binds these six together is an interest in the real, and a fascination with the ways of sensing one's world, of experiencing time, unity, memory, and change. For each poet, the aesthetic character of the work takes precedence, and its presentation is informed by the philosophical groundwork laid by ancient thinkers. Written not only for specialists but also for students and all readers with a general interest in literature and poetry, this book provides introductory material to each poet considered as well as offering critical readings that never stray far from the poetic texts." - from the back cover. This volume contains Ficino's extended analysis a nd commentary of Phaedrus, which he explocates as a meditation on 'beauty in all its forms' and a sublime work of theology. A student of the Neoplatonic school of Plotinus and Proclus, he was committed to reconciling Platonism with Christianity, in the hope that such a reconciliation would initiate a spiritual revival and return of the golden age. His Platonic evangelizing was eminently successful and widely influential, and his 'Platonic Theology', translated into English for the first time in this edition, is one of the keys to understanding the art, thought, culture, and spirituality of the Renaissance." - from the dj. 17493 FIEDLER, Leslie A. The Second Stone. First Edition in dustjacket. Signed.
Stein and Day, 1963, 1963
FIEDLER, Leslie A. The Second Stone : A Love Story. New York : Stein and Day, Publishers (1963). First Edition. Pp (6),7-303,(1). 8vo [147 x 218 mm], orange paper-covered boards, red cloth covered spine, gilt lettering to front board and spine, top edge dyed maroon.

Leslie Aaron Fiedler (b. March 8, 1917, Newark, N.J. – d. January 29, 2003, Buffalo, N.Y.) was an American literary critic, known for his interest in mythography and his championing of genre fiction. His work also involves application of psychological theories to American literature.

"The setting is Rome. The story is outrageous, shocking and bizarre. Its people are bohemians and intellectuals, innocents and fanatics. It has a most unconventional triangle. The woman is pregnant; the two men are boyhood friends, full of animus towards each other's worlds; one of the men is Jewish, the other not; all are maried; all are Americans away from home. Their extraordinary, frenzied relationship is played against the wildly comic background of the First International Congress on Love. There are assignations in the strangest of places, a cocktail party that verges on madness, a street riot in Rome. And at times the satire is suddenly stilled by a story that is moving and deeply affecting.

The Second Stone is the frst full length work of fiction by Leslie A. Fiedler, whose An End To Innocence, Love and Death in the American Novel, No! In Thunder, Pull Down Vanity and other writings, for more than a decade, have resulted in gleeful attacks, high praise, scorn, admiration, gossip, major reviews, critical chain reactions, and much much talk particularly among the thousands of upper middlebrows and highbrows who are Fiedler enthusiasts and those who have an anti-Fieder axe to grind - or swing.

The Second Stone will hardly be an exception. It is carved out of brimstone by "the wild man of American literary criticism," whose story "Nude Croquet" caused a sensatioion when it first appeared in Esquire in 1957. The fact that a distinguished and controversial critic has 'dared" to write a novel will in itself set the intellectals' wardrums to rumbling.

This novel is not for readers who like their fiction roamtic and sentimental. Nor is it for those who shrink from the unconventional when it happpens on platform, pulpit, or in the bedroom. Surprise after surprise waits to burst out of these pages at the readers. Fiedler's newest book, The Second Stone, will not escape censure. It will not escape your memory either, as so many novels do. Of one thing you can be certain: what happens within these pages will be the subject of heated discussion for a long time to come." (from the dj).

Some fading to the top edge, also a small waterspot, head and tail of spine lightly rubbed, else very good in unclipped dustjacket (with some faint foxing to the upper spine). Signed, with inscription, by Fiedler to the half-title page. 75.00

17494 FIEDLER, Leslie A. Pull Down Vanity and Other Stories. First Edition in dustjacket.
1962, 1962
FIEDLER, Leslie A. Pull Down Vanity and other stories. Phladelphia and New York : J. B. Lippincott Company, (1962). First Edition. Pp (10),[11]-249,(5). 8vo [144 x 209 mm], white spine lettered in green, black and maroon, purple boards art-illustrated in black, top edge dyed black.

Leslie Aaron Fiedler (b. March 8, 1917, Newark, N.J. – d. January 29, 2003,,Buffalo, N.Y.) was an American literary critic, known for his interest in mythography and his championing of genre fiction. His work also involves application of psychological theories to American literature.

"A new book by Leslie Fiedler, author of the much-discussed Love and Death in the American Novel (1960), is certain, to quote Malcolm Cowley, "to be the subject of after-dinner arguments, especially if the kids have been sent to bed." And if that book contains, among other items, a story as famous as Mr. Fiedler's "Nude Croquet," which created a furore on its appearance in Esquire in 1957 that has yet to die down, the after-dinner arguments are likely to be continued over the breakfast table.

Mr. Fiedler's hallmark as a critic is his boldness ("a kind of wild man of American literary criticism," one reviewer has called him), and the three novellas and five stories in this, his first collection of fiction, are equally bold in their approach. Since 1948, when his dismaying and unforgettable story "The Teeth" first appeared, he has been dealing unsparingly, in a variety of modes — all of them impolite —-with the manners and morals of the American intellectual community. His campaign reached its climax in "Nude Croquet" and in the untoward revelations of the title story "Pull Down Vanity!", set at a writers' conference—word has it that since the latter story appeared it has been unsafe for anyone to attend, much less teach at, a writers' conference anywhere in middle America.

The stories in Pull Down Vanity will entertain as many readers as they will shock, for Mr. Fiedler's candor is equaled only by his irreverence and his irrepressible sense of the absurd in human relations. The reader's amusement may be mingled with outrage, at being hit, so to speak, here he lives;—however, in the words of the author, ""Nobody ever died from it." (from the dj).

FIEGUTH, Joyce. Flour Sacks and Binder Twine. (Belleville, Ontario) : Epic Press, (2003). First Edition. Pp. [1]-143,(1). 8vo, photo-illustrated black card covers, white lettering to spine.

Joyce Fieguth, née Epp (b. 1925, Rosthern, Saskatchewan).

"As a six-week-old baby, Joyce Epp and her somewhat naive young parents Isaac and Sarah travelled by horse and wagon, with a cow ties behind and a few dishes and doilies packed carefully away, to being a new life of homesteading north of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. They and the members of their extended family who also made the trek had almost nothing: no income, and few material possessions.

Yet despite poverty and challenges, their life was a rich and happy one. Flour Sacks and Binder Twine tells the story of pioneering in the 1920s and 30s in a community where everything was made out of or held together by bleached flour sacks and an abundance of binder twine, reinforced by great measures of family love and faith in God." - from the rear cover.
