22117 GUSTAFSON, Ralph Solidarnosc : Prelude. First Edition
Progressive Publications, Sherbrooke, Qc , 1983,
GUSTAFSON, Ralph. Solidarnosc : Prelude. (Sherbrooke, Quebec : Progressive Publications , 1983). First Edition. Unpaginated. Pp (16). 8vo, illustratedwhite cardcovers. '[...] this poem celebrating the heroic resilience of th e Polish people [...]." 'This poem is a poem of principle. It would have been better if the author had been manhandled by the bullyboys of Jaruzelski and Andropov; if he had added a rose to the cross of flowers that won't go away in front of the church of St. Anne's in Warsaw. The distance between the emotion and the experience is to be regretted. But the poem still, if impoverished by being secondhand, must be written. The poet is his world. Through the transcendance of poetry, time and distance are overcome. Milton was not present in Piedmont when the massacre of the dissidents was perpetrated nor was Wordsworth in Venice when the Venetian Republic was extinguished. Their comments on those struggles of liberty against tyranny are part of contemporary thought. No artistic equation between this poem and their poems is drawn. The poem is stating that freedom in Poland is freedom in the Eastern Townships of Canada.- " the Foreword. Shipping will be less as this is a slim item. Name, else very good. 20.00

"These essays are extended notices of the plays, but they are not precisely what I would have writen if I had been preparing them for a daily paper -- supposing that any paper couldallow a critic the time or the space to write at such length. They are not first-night judgments (which critics and actors both deplore but cannot es cape) because I have been able to take time to see the plays more than once, and have had some leisure in which to think about them. For these reasonsI may have put emphasis on things which those who saw the plays will find surprising, and I may not have mentioned things which they thought worthy of censure." - from the preface. GUTMANN, Amy. Identity in Democracy . Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, (2003). Pp. (10),[1]-246. 8vo, blue cloth with white lettering to spine. "This is a book about the good, the bad, adn the ugly of identity politics by one of America's leading political thinkers. Amy Gutmann rises abovethe raging polemics that often characterize discussions of identity gropus and offers a fair-minded assessment of the role they play in democracies. She addresses fundamental questions of timeless urgency while keeping in focus their relevance to contemporary debates: Do some identity groups undermine the greater democratic good and thus their own legitimacy in a democratic society? Even if so, how is a democracy to fiarly distinguish between groups such as the KKK on the one hand and the NAACP on the other? Should democracies exempt members of some minorities from certain legitimate or widely accepted rules, scuh as Canada's allowing Sikh members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to wear turbans instead of Stetsons? Do voluntary gropuslike the Boy Scouts have a right to discriminate on grounds of sexual pref erence, gender or race?" - from the dj. Vg in dj. 30.00

The "1988" of the publishing date is on a wee sticker. "Volume 2 of Lily's Story". "Shaman's Ground is sixth in a series of works - in poetry and prose - set in Lambton County and entitled: Time Is The Metaphor". "Shaman's Ground continues the story of Lily Fairchild begun in St. Vitus Dance, tracing the rich details of her life from1878 to 1922 in and around the new village of Point Edward on the shores o f Lake Huron. Once again the tumult of her personal life is set against, and influenced by, the great historical events of the period: economic depression, devastating epidemic, the Second Riel Rebellion, the building of the St. Clair Tunnel, and the killing grounds of Flanders and the Somme. Through her sons and a series of lovers - Lucien the locomotive man, Arthur the West Coast vaudevillian, and the mysterious recluse of the Queen's Hotel - Lily's life reaches out to touch the board rooms of Bay Street and the literary salons of Imperial London, where Whistler and Wilde keep androgynous company. Part fable and part documentary, Shaman's Ground is ultimately aboutsurvival and loss, about aging and the changes it brings, about memory its elf and that elusive 'magic ground' we long to call 'home'." - from rear cover. "Volume 1 of Lily's Story". "St. Vitus Dance is fifth in a series of works - in poetry and prose - set in Lambton County and entitled: Time Is The Metaphor". "St. Vitus Dance tells the story of a remarkable pioneer woman, born in the backwoods of Lambton County, Ontario in 1840. Lily's stuggle to survive and grow and discover her place in the scheme of things is complicated not only by the ordinary travail of frontier living but by the impact of historical events themselves: thegreat railway rivalries of the 1860s and 70s, the accidental discovery of oil at Petrolia, the grand tour of the Prince of Wales to Her Majesty's dominions in 1860, the Underground Railroad ferrying liberated slaves in safety to Canada, and the tensions and civil strife of a bold new nation-in-the-making. St. Vitus Dance is part history and part fable, replete with historical presonages and a bizarre gallery of local characters - the hearty forbears of those found in Don Gutteridge's earlier novels about the village ofPoint Edward." - from rear cover. GUTTRIDGE, Leonard and J.D. SMITH. The Commodores [the dustjacket add subtitle : The U.S. Navy in the Age of Sail]. New York, Evanston, and London : Harper & Row, Publishers, (1969). First Edition. Pp (4),[v]-ix,(3),3-340,(2)+ 16-page central section of illustrations. 8vo, blue cloth, silver and bl ue lettering to spine. "The wonder is that there ever was an American Navy.Threatened at birth, nearly strangled in its infancy, dwarfed in its youth , the Navy's existence for half a century was a constant struggle to survive against Jeffersonian Republicans and such rabid penny-pinchers as Albert Gallatin. The Commodores chronicles the economic and political currents in the young nation which determined the Navy's faltering early years. It tells, magnificently, the story of the fighting at sea: the flambovant clashes with the Barbary pirates - including the embarrassing capture and later triumphant burning of the Philadelphia - and privateers of the European powers; the battles between the Constellation and the French frigate Insurgente, the Constitution and the Vengeance: the ordeals by weather of the Essex andthe Congress. It follows the course of the War of 1812 at sea and on the G reat Lakes—the dramatic escane of the Constitution from a British squadron off New Jersey; the great individual duels between British and American frigates, the battles of Lake Erie and Lake Champlain. And, perhaps even more dramatically, it is the story of the commodores themselves, the men who commanded the squadrons of ships and who fought their battles - men like Thomas Truxtun, David Porter, William Bainbridge, the Barrons, and Stephen Decatur - whose pride, jealousy, and hotly contested rivalries enlivened and influenced events. Finally, here for the first time is the full story of the Chesapeake affair — the surrender of the American frigate to H.M.S. Leopard under circumstances similar to the Pueblo incident of 1968, the long trial of Commodore James Barron and the tragic consequences many years later to Stephen Decatur, America's greatest naval hero." - from the dj. 1.
