(6),[vii]-viii,(2),3-311,(1). 8vo, illustrated blue card covers with white lettering to front cover, white and beige lettering to spine. Fiona Kidman, b. March 9, 1940, Hawera,New Zealand, writer, teacher and librarian. "In 1854, a group of settlers, led by stern preacher Norman McLeod, established a community at Waipu in t he northern part of New Zealand. The community had followed him from Scotland in 1817 to found a settlement in Nova Scotia [St. Ann's, Cape Breton Island], then subsequently to New Zealand via Australia. Their incredible journeys actually happened, but Fiona Kidman breathes life and contemporary relevance into the facts by creating a remarkable fictional story of three women entangled in the migrations -- Isabella, her daughter Annie and granddaughter Maria. McLeod's leadership meant that anyone who ran counter to him had to live a life of secrets. The secrets encapsulate the spirit of these women in their varied reactions to McLeod's strict edicts and connect the past to the present and the future." - from the rear cover. Very good. 20.00

Tennyson 559, Tennyson, Cape Bretoniana 4535, MacDonald, A Bibliography of Victoria County, 195.

From Scotland to St. Ann's, Cape Breton to New Zealand.

Norman McLeod, (b. September 17, 1780, Lochinver, Sutherland – d. March 14, 1866, Waipu, New Zealand).

Miss Flora McPherson (the only child of James and Maribel McPherson, b. ca 1920 Crinan, Elgin County, Ontario - d. ?) was a librarian in London, Ontario at the time of publication.

"A strange sea-saga of the mid-nineteenth century, of the long and perilous voyage from Nova Scotia to New Zealand by six brave, local-built ships: the Margaret, the Highland Lass, the Gertrude, the Spray, the Breadalbane, the Ellen Lewis, is perhaps the climax of this remarkable story. For with them the six ships took a ready-made community. Their passengers had come individually from Scotland to make a new home in Canada. In the thirty years that they had lived around the bay of St. Ann's on Cape Breton Island they had found unity in one man, Norman McLeod.

It was not their love for him that united them; some of them hated him bitterly, and with good reason. It was not their cheerful obedience to his rule; some of them accepted it with grudging coldness. It was not even agreement with his beliefs; rebellion smouldered in many minds. But because each was in some way weaker than he, they were all caught in the sphere of Norman's control. They were within his wall against the world.

As their magistrate, landowner, teacher and clergyman, he was a tyrant in the days when small tyrants were building Canadian communities. But in his persuasive rule he excelled them all. Ruthlessly he bent them all to his will.

This is the story of his road to power, the community he created and the destiny which they found together in a quiet New Zealand bay at Waipu, where once more he tried to shape them and they responded with hatred and adoration, with fear and with reverence. " - from the dj.

"Children, Children, Look to Yourselves, The Wor ld is Mad... These dying words of Norman McLeod display the tenderness and tyranny by which he created his own people out of Scotland's exiles, bound them to himself and led them on one of the great pioneering adventures of the 19th Century - to settlement in Cape Breton Island and 21 years later, to breaking ground again in New Zealand. 37 years; 22,000 miles. As their teacher, judge, minister and taskmaster, Norman aimed to 'withdraw the faithful from the menace of the worldy community. In Watchman Against the World, Flora McPherson has brought Norman McLeod's St. Ann's Bay alive as a bustling, integrated, religious and altogether down-to-earth community. While focused on Norman and his people, this is also an excellent one-volume read through early Cape Breton history, giving us a well-researched and beautifully told Cape Breton Classic." from the rear. Pp (4),[v]-xiii,(1),[1]-562. 8vo, red cloth. "The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussionsof ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electr onic age they live in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his astounding knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe." - from the dj. Spadoni and Donnelly 2118.Book design by Harley Parker including printing in several colours. First published a limited edition handmade 'zine' in 1954. "'All remnants of European nationalism and individualism have been reduced to cosmic baby nowder The media are blowing a lot of the baby powder around the pendant cradle ofthe New Man today. The dust gets in our eyes.' Here is Marshall McLuhan in inevitable McLuhan style, introducing Counterblast. And Counterblast, firs t conceived twelve years ago and recently completely revised, may well prove one of the most significant of his works. On the one hand, it is a dress rehearsal of such books as Gutenberg Galaxy and Understanding Media, and, on the other, it is representative of the new directions McLuhan's thought has since taken. Counterblast is a fascinating summation of the methods through which McLuhan has been probing Western, and particularly North Americanconsciousness. Here is McLuhanism simplified, and explained: a McLuhan pri mer. And as the New Yorker once mentioned, 'Other observers have been content to repeat criticisms of industrial society that were formulated a century ago, as if civilization had been steadily emptied out since the advent ofthe power loom... McLuhan has dared to seek the cure in the disease.' Work ing closely with the designer of the book, Harlev Parker, McLuhan has created an extra-typographical 'happening', every page of which blasts at preconceptions. Counterblast disrupts visually, aurally — in every way. jarring our whole minds and in so doing forcing a renewed awareness of our creative abilities to make sense of our environment." - from the dj. McLUHAN, Marshall. Counterblast. London : Rapp + Whiting Ltd, (1968). FirstBritish Edition. Pp (4),5-143,(1). 8vo, purple cloth, silver lettering to spine. Book design by Harley Parker including printing in several colours. First published a limited edition handmade 'zine' in 1954. "In 1911, Wyndham Lewis's BLAST heralded a revolution in the arts and the minds of men. Using unconventional typography, graphic design, and serious irreverence, BLAST proclaimed that centuries of tradition had been wrenched askew by rapid changes in society and by the dynamism of the machine. Now Marshall McLuhan sets off a COUNTERBLAST to tell us that we are again in revolutionary times. COUNTERBLAST is a manifesto and a book of revelations. Behind it is Dr McLuhan's thesis that innovations in technology, and especially in the communications media, radically alter not only our life styles buf our very reality, our perception of the world. But it is not his way to argue, traditionally, from A to B to C. The free- associative structure of this book - itself a departure from old notions of 'logic' - is constantly exploded by impudent headlines and boldly fractured graphics. The result is a dazzling and dizzying reading experience." from the dj. Very good in slightly nicked andrubbedunclipped dustjacket. 60.00

Pp (8),[ix]-x,(2),[1]-259,(1). Maps in text. 8vo, photo-illustrated blue card covers. "'I went to the Arctic hoping to understand the impact of new military weapons development on the Inuit. In that most marginal of lands, I found reflected the most profound questions of survival we face.' Kevin McMahon spent several months in 1987 visiting Inuit communities and military bases in Canada's Arctc. He discovered that simple questions of sovereignty were dwarfed by the dramatic impact of technology - from military weaponry to television - on the Inuit way of life. 'Thirty years ago the the people of the Arctic were living as close to a primitive existence as could be found on this planet. This world was instantly and radically transformed by the arrival of the American armed forces and Canadian bureaucracies that blew into the north like a wind of steel.' A disturbing and powerful book, Arctic Twilight paints a sensitive picture of a proud and resourceful people who have been victimized by the forces of technology and by the governments that rule over them. In lyrical, wonderfully crafted prose - as striking as the landscape he describes - McMahon capturesthe hopes and fears of Canada's Inuit as they struggle, against seemingly impossible odds, to retain their identity in the midst of a profoundly alien world." -from the rear cover. George G. Harrap and Co., London, 1956,
McMANUS, Chris. Whisky Johnny. London: George G. Harrap & Co., (1956). First Editon. Pp (6),[7]-199,(1). 8vo, blue cloth with silver lettering to front and spine. A nautical novel a Scottish author. Smith & Weller, Sea Fiction Guide 1654. "Captain John Coulson, better known as "Whisky Johnny," badlyneeded a ship. He was a run-job skipper, delivering all types of craft to foreign ports, but his last job had ended up a total wreck, with the resultthat his Master's ticket had been suspended. So when a stranger who said h e was an agent of the Chiang-Kai-Shek government offered him £i,ooo to sailan old hopper-barge to Formosa he needed little persuasion to accept the d eal. The agent was very plausible, and free with his money, but something suggested to Whisky Johnny that the voyage would be eventful. It was indeed, though apart from the difficulty of handling the hopper, there was little to arouse comment until they reached Brazil, when the agent ordered a complete change of route. By now, the skipper was certain that the agent was playing a double game, but they had all their work cut out to keep the hopper afloat. As one event follows another in quick successsion, the story mountsto a gripping climax. This is a genuinely exciting sea story that combines the natural hazards of deep-sea life with the skulduggery of a modern thri ller." (from the dj). Top edge sunned, penned name, faint waterstain to fore-edge, else very good in worn, chipped and waterstained, but unclipped, dustjacket. 20.00

Malcolm Cook McMillan (b. August 22, 1910, Stockton, Alabama - d. July 1,1989).

"In this book about Confederate Alabama Malcolm C. McMillan focuses on the office of the governor, tracing chronologically the challenges faced by each of Alabama's wartime governors -- A.B. Moore, John Gill Shorter, and Thomas Hill Watts. By searching through more than a thousand letters and other documents from each of the governors, Professor McMillan is able to tell us how a Confederate governor thought and acted as he attempted to conduct the business of the state in the midst of war.

A.B. Moore, originally a Union Democrat, was fated to lead the state through the secession crisis in a manner that was never forgiven by Confederate cooperationalists or the Union -- he was the only one of Alabama's governors to be imprisoned after the war. John Gill Shorter, buoyed by his sense of God's 'inward approval', ignored political and popular pressure as he became the governor most cooperative with the Confederate war effort. Despite his divine sanction, Shorter was soundly defeated by the affable and genial 'Big Tom' Watts, who had been waiting in the shadows wanting to be governor almost from the beginning of the war -- preferring that office, in fact, to the office of attorney general of the Confederacy. As attorney general he had advocated a strong central government, but as governor he defended states' rights and so, inadvertently, obstructed the cause of winning the war." - from the dustjacket.

John Leonard McMullan (b. July 22, 1948, Montreal - d. July 13, 2017, Halifax) was professor of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary's University, Halifax at the time of publication.

"The 'truth' behind the Westray mine disaster remains a highly contested matter. This book is a study of how the media represented the events surrounding the Westray explosion and its aftermath from 1992 to 2002.

Through a recounting of the tragedy and the way it was reported in the news, McMullan reveals the relationship between power, discourse and the production of truth. The book provides an analysis of news as a contested space where different truth-telling exercises competed for dominance: accident, legal tragedy, law and order, and political scandal discourses. It describes and analzes the changing relations between power, claims-making and the production of news as truth. McMullan concludes that the press imagined crime out in their collective representation of Westray and after. Mystification and misdirection preserved the appearance of corporate respectability. The press did not demarcate the corporation as capable of killing, and the news coverage, while registering alternative truths, did not reconstitute the truth of Westray as corporate criminality. That was the absence in the presence of their organized truth-telling." - from rear cover.
