36601 MEADER, John T. Northeast Folklore 27: 1988. Dell Turner : The Stories of His Life. Northeast Folklore 27: 1988.
Northeast Folklore Society, Orono, ME, 1998, ISBN:0943197198
MEADER, John T. Dell Turner : The Stories of His Life. (Orono, ME): The Northeast Folklore Society, (1998). Pp 128. 8vo, illustrated card covers. Northeast Folklore XXVII. "[...] is a chronological biography of Dell Turner. Second, it is a study of his many stories and the many stories told about him. An third, it is my own personal discovery of my grandfather." -from the text. Of interest to the nautical aficionado may well be the chapter on fishing. Much of Dell’s working life was spent in lumber camps, occasionally as a cook and often as part of the crew. It wasn't until his retirement thathe had the freedom to do some sport fishing. He was an angler at heart and was well known for spinning a story, so in the tradition of many fishing s tories he tells of the joys of drinking with the boys, eating their catch and being one ahead of the wardens on Cold Stream Pond in Enfield. In the 1960's Dell met and fished with Allan Nugent a well known guide, owner and operator of a set of sporting camps on Chamberlain Lake, at the south end of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. And here is another "tall fishing tale" for the reader. Front cover marked with a narrow 3" long stain, not affecting text or colour photo of Dell, else very good. 20.00

Pp (6),vii-xvi,1-248. 8vo, blue hardcovers. In the Palgrave Politics of Identity and Citizenship Series. "The emergence of public Muslim identities is widely considered to be one of the most interesting and pressing sociological and political concerns of the day. With cases of Muslim identity claims-making in European nation-states, and a global geo-political context that is marked by issues of international terrorism and Muslimradicalism, the interest in Muslim identities, and their interaction with nation-state governance, has assumed a profound significance in research and policy agendas across European politics and society. In order to understand current trends in the adoption and espousal of Muslim identities in Britain, not only is it necessary to obtain a historical understanding of theirdevelopment through British approaches to minority integration. It is also necessary to look at forms of 'consciousness' that are informing and shapi ng the assertion of Muslim identities in Britain, and what this can tell usabout their future orientation. This book develops a novel sociological an d political understanding of Muslim identities in Britain, which is elaborated through case studies of Muslim mobilizations over issues of education, discrimination legislation, media representation, as well as a consideration of the local impact of global concerns surrounding issues of terrorism and Muslim radicalism." - from rear cover. 36672 MEILLASOUX, Claude American Ethnological Society, Monograph 45 Urbanization of an African Community : Voluntary Associations in Bamako. industjacket

MEILLASOUX, Claude. Urbanization of an African Community : Voluntary Associations in Bamako. Seattle and London : University of Washington Press, (1968). Pp (4),v-xii,(2),3-165,(3),+ 8 pp plates. Maps. Tables. Index. 8vo, green cloth, dark green lettering to spine. The American Ethnological Society,Monograph 45. "As urbanization spreads and new nation-states emerge in the turbulent world of Africa, attention is turning to the cities, focal point s for so many developing nations. One such city, Bamako, former headtown ofa small chiefdom, grew as the administrative and commercial center of the French Sudan to become the capital and largest city of modern Mali. Urbanization of an African Community, part of a comparative study undertaken in several African cities, is a descriptive study of voluntary associations, a form of social grouping in Bamako which is characteristic of many African cities in their present stage of evolution. The first part ot the book explains the geographical and historical factors of tiie growth of the village and the sociological structures derived from these factors. It describes the city's social strata, the traditional social backgrounds of its most numerous groups, and the original tribal associations which, closely linked to village activities and politics, have traditionally provided the discipline and rules by which people are educated and learn to recognize their distinctive status in relation to one another and at different levels ol society. Part 2 deals with the role of modern voluntary associations in the process of urbanization. Beginning with the period before Independence—extending from about 1940 to 1960—it studies the nature of these groups and the degree to which they offer townspeople a context in which traditional values of thevillage, based on family ties and seniority, can be reconciled with the We stern emphasis on money and education. Besides interpreting the urbanization process, Meillassoux describes the city's official, required, government-sponsored associations and the rapidly proliterating Western-oriented clubswhose members come from all parts of the city and whose commonalty has a m ore nearly urban basis. Enriched by a selection of striking photographs taken by the author, this study will be valuable to anthropologists as well asto sociologists and political scientists concerned with the emergent evolu tion of the new nation-states." Note : 1,120 illustrations, including 560 in full color. "Now, in PHOTOREALISM SINCE 1980, Meisel continues his monumental work - to the same stunning effect. Covering the years since the last volume appeared, the present work offers meticulous documentation of the complete careers of the thirteen central Photorealists and adds six others whose relevance to the movemmenmt has been firmly established inthe eighties. It also in troduces six new painters working in the classic Photorealist vein whose careers should blossom in the nineties. Page after page of revealing illustrations afford a rare opportunity to study in depththe fascinating stages of how an art style and its individual practitioner s evolve over time. And, as in the first volume, there is an abundance of joyous, disturbing, and breathtaking images; among them, Charles Bell's luminous pinball machines, Chuck Close's mesmerizing portraits, and Richard Estes's optically complex panoramas. For the past decade, Meisel has examined all the exhibitions, catalogues, books, and articles pertaining to Photorealism, and he has included every significant one here." (from the dj). McClelland & Stewart, Inc., Toronto, 1989, ISBN:0771058632 1989 0771058632
MELADY, John. Pilots : Canadian Stories from the Cockpit. (Toronto) : McClelland & Stewart, Inc., (1989). First Edition. Pp (8),ix-xi,(1),13-269,(3),+ 16 pages of plates. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, black lettering to spine.

John Melady (b. September 12, 1938, Seaforth, Ontario).

"This is the story of flying in Canada - told by the men and women who have lived it, the pilots. The story begins with John McCurdy's history-making flight in the Silver Dart over the frozen shores of Lake Bras d'Or, Baddeck, in 1909, and moves through the years, documenting the landmark flights, retelling the yarns and lore of flying, and introducing the heroes - the famous and the unsung.

The heroes include the aviation pioneers, those men and women who built planes in their basements or chicken barns with old iunk, piano wire, and plenty of imagination; the early stunt flyers who barnstormed across the prairies, thrilling audiences with their daring loops and dives; and the aviators of thp Great War, such as Billy Bishop, Raymond Collishaw, Roy Brown (who many believe shot down the Red Baron), and Mel Alexnder (who learned to fly at Kathenne Stinson's Texas school in a scant 210 minutes). Here, too, are some of the many inspiring stories from the men and women who flew in World War II, the Air Transport Auxiiarty flyers and the pilots who flew bombers and fighters in the flak-filled skies over Europe.

Melady also recounts the stories of our legendary bush pilots, including the adventures of "Wop" May, whose speedv air-deliverv of antitoxin averted a diphtheria epidemic in Little Red River, Alberta. Punch Dickins, now ninety years old, recalls his flight in 1928 acros the unflown - and unmapped - Barren Grouds. We also meet the bush pilots who moved into the boardrooms of today's large commercial airlines, including Max Ward, and a modern pioneer, Judy Camernn, Air Canada's first female pilot.

Where there are stories about flying there are inevitably stories about "the crashes": Bob Pearson's skilfull handling of a crippled Boeing 767 as it fell out of the sky; Moe Grant's story of spending four days in the Yukon with a broken, frozen foot after his Tiger Moth crashed on a mountainside; and the incredible experience of Garry "Sky" King, who was rescued, after his Starfighter went down off the coast of Denmark, by a Search and Rescue crew that included a long-lost friend.

Air ambulance pilots, Korea and Vietnam veterans, aerobatic stunt flyers, and the jet jocks: We meet them all, united in their sheer love of flying - and story-telling - in Pilots. In the last chapter we enter the jet age - with John Melady recalling his own thrilling experience of flying an F-18 Hornet." (from the dj).
