MIGONE, Cristof. Start, Stop. May 5th to June 9th, 2007, and January 24th to March 1st, 2008, Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery. (Montreal: Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia University, 2007). Pp. (8),9-146,(6). Illustrated in colour. Double column. Square 8vo, printed white card covers with black lettering to covers. "Start Stop. is a particularly rich project. It sounds out the character of the rhythmic phenomenon through the presentation of works by a dozen artists, which echo the very demands of artistic practice. The nature of the works shown (brought together in two groupings and shown at an eight month interval : START in May-June 2007 and STOP. in January-February 2008) is extremely varied: video and text installations, objects, robotic mechanisms, architectural space, performance, video, drawingsand audio works. Migone inscribes these works ina field that vacillates be tween 'continuity and discontinuity, finitude and infinitude' touching on issues that confront us with the properties and mechanisms of cognition, perception and intellection at work within each of the pieces, as well as within ourselves, in such a way that their presence causes one to ask the following questions: where does the work begin and where does it end? Where and in what does it take shape?" - from the director's foreword. Includes contributions from Oliva Boudrea, Peter Courtemanche, Cal Crawford, Stephen Ellwood, Marla Hlady, Adrian Piper, and Liv Strand (START); Patrick Beaulieu, Simone Jones & Lance Winn, Therese Mastroiacovoc, Charlemagne Palestine, Samuel Roy-Bois, and Helen Tak (STOP.). "Conor Mihell offers a compelling image of Lake Superior’s Canadian shorethrough colourful personality sketches, adventure stories, and environment al accounts. Admire the kitschy decor of lighthouse cottager Maureen Robertson, a 76-year-old who spends six months of the year alone on a remote island; enter the debate over a controversial aggregate quarry in Wawa, Ontario; and learn how the author’s love affair with the world’s largest freshwater lake began on quests for a near-mystical, glacier-dropped monolith. Mihell’s stories build on Lake Superior’s rich and varied history and support its critical place in Canadian culture. Since the beginning, Lake Superior has been revered for its God-like qualities of power, unpredictability, and aseemingly endless expanse of life-sustaining freshwater. The lake’s rugged yet fragile nature, hardscrabble characters, and outpost communities defin e rural Northern Ontario. Experience it for yourself in this first collection of stories by one of the region’s most acclaimed journalists." -- fron rear cover. Very good. 14.00

37231 MIKES, George STERN, Jossi Prophet Motive : Israel Today and Tomorrow.. First Edition in dustjacket
Andre Deutsch, London, 1969,
MIKES, George. The Prophet Motive : Israel Today and Tomorrow. Illustrated by Jossi Stern. (London) : Andre Deutsch (1969). First Edition. Pp (8),9-[158],(2). 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Israel is unique as a country - well, apart from anything else, where else would you find a Hungarian Jew, masquerading as an Arab and buying his camel on hire purchase? But if it's a country unique in its eccentricities, it's also a nation unique in its problems. For a writer it is all to easy to see Israel in terms of absolutes: absolutely right, absolutely wrong - when it's not even absolutelyJewish. Israel is people and it is the people George Mikes talked to who m ake this book not only funny, but also informative, lucid and full of insights. Mr Mikes does not shirk the issues: he looks at the old problems: Arabhostility, the Palestinian refugees; and at the new ones created by the Si x Day War, like the occupied territories and the changing attitudes of the outside world." - from the dj. Part I. The Country - Jewish Understatement - Vae Victoribus! - How Well Off? - Money - Manners - On Books, Brandy and Rape - Language - How to Avoid Food - Politics - A Racial Problem - Names; Part II. Pp (6),7-207,(1). 8vo, red cloth spine, yellow cloth boards, black lettering to spine, top edge dyed red. "In this post post-war era the story of Japan is as extraordinary as any the world has to offer. Here, George Mikes, with his unique combination of wit. sympathy, and clear-sightedness, writes of that fascinating country where, quite sim ply, whatever succeeds is good. In the twenty-odd years since her total defeat in World War II, the forms of democracy have brought Japan material prosperity far greater than anything she knew in her most glorious days of militarism. Consequently, in a manner of speaking, democracy is now king in Japan; not, as Mr. Mikes shows, because the Japanese have acquired any idealistic affection for the system, but because it works." Large 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Japanese Aircraft 1910-1941 will almost certainly come to be regarded as one of the truly outstanding works of aviation history. In the preface the authors state 'Forthe vast number of Japanese aeroplane types that were built during the per iod covered by this book, it is disappointing that more has not been written in English about them'. As a result of massive research the authors have now corrected this shortcoming. The names Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Nakajima and a few others are well known but this work includes descriptions of the products of large numbers of companies and organisations that are known only to a lew people outside of Japan. The aeroplanes covered here range from the single type produced by the Awazu Flight Research Studio, include as would be expected the proliferation of Aichis, Kawanishis, Kawasakis, Mitsubishis and Nakajimas, and ends in alphabetical order with the products from theNaval Air Arsenal at Yokosuka. Including early privately-built aeroplanes and those produced under licence, this work covers nearly 400 types. Appendices include aircraft of the Pacific war, a comparison of calendars, a bibliography?and a glossary. include aircraft of the Pacific war, a comparison of calendars, , a bibliography and a glossary." - from the dj. "The excavations at Cheviot Quarry and Thirlings have produced a huge quantity of archaeological information, backed up by various scientific analyses, that has deepened understanding of the Neolithic, Bronze Age and early medieval periods in North-east England. With both sites situated close to each other on opposite sides of an ancient wetland known as the Galewood Depression in the heart of the Milfield Basin, this area has provided the bulk of the archaeological evidence for the Neolithic between Yorkshire and Scotland. The two landmark reports contained in this volume provide up to date and authoritative accounts of two of the major excavations to have taken place in the region whilst setting their findings in a broader context." - from the rear cover. MILBERRY, Larry. The Canadair Sabre. (Toronto) : CANAV Books, (1986). Pp. 372. Fully illustrated. Triple column. 4to, blue cloth, silver titles to spine. Larry Milberry (b. 1943, Haileybury, Ontario). A detailed history of the classic jet fighter, the F-86 Sabre, used by the RCAF. "This is the most detailed book ever about the famous F-86 Sabre. Designed by North American Aviation in California, the Sabre is the classic jet fighter of all time, the plane that made history by taking control of the skies over Korea and drubbing the MiG-15. Chosen by the RCAF to fulfill its day-fighter needs, most of the natty little Canadian Sabres would be stationed in Europe with No.1 Air Division. [...] The Canadair Sabre contains the largest number of Sabre photos ever published in one book. As well, there are drawings, a full production list, various specs and statistics, and even drinking songs, poems and cartoons. This book will surely bring waves of nostalgia to anyone who was involved with air force life in the 1950s and will delight anyone with an interest in some of the most exciting years in military history." - from the dj. Illustrated. 4to, red cloth with metallic lettering to spine. Larry Milberry (b. 1943, Haileybury, Ontario). "The North Star gave TCA [Trans-Canada Air Lines] a modern aircraft for NOrth Atlantic routes in the postwar years, and a good transcontinental workhorse. When the rest of BOAC's postwardesigns were not living up to expectations, it gave the British airline (w hich called in the Argonaut) a reliable, money-making airliner; it brought Canadina Pacific Airlines onto the international scene; and it gave the RCAF a sturdy transport for such major operations as the Korean airlift and UNduty in the Congo. It its declining years, the North Star served many less er operators, carrying tourists to Mediterranean sunspots, conducting aerial surveys of the ocean floor, tracking missiles in the South Pacific and, inevitably, getting into trouble." - from the dj. 37258 MILES, Fraser Slow Boat on Rum Row. First Edition in dustjacket.
Harbour Publishing, Madeira Park, BC, 1992, ISBN:1550170694
MILES, Fraser. Slow Boat on Rum Row. (Madeira Park, BC): Harbour Publishing, (1992). First Printing. Pp. (14),7-270,(10). Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "Life had its ups and downs on a 'fireboat', smuggling liquor into the western United States during Prohibition. For hundreds of men in the 1920s and 30s, it was the only way they could survive. To this day, it is an episode in history about which little is known thanks to the rum runner's motto, 'Don't ever tell nothin' tonobody nohow'. To Fraser Miles, however, the 'fireboats' promised not only the first real money he'd ever made, but a life of adventure that was rare ly available to a young Canadian of limited means. Miles was still in his teens when he went to sea on the Ruth B. Much to his surprise, he trived in this rugged environment, and found that as well as dissolute old salts, bootleggers, complainers and just plain crooks, the rum runners included plenty of 'high type fellas'. Fraser was brash enough not only to keep a diary of his experiences, but to photograph his fellow rum runners at work. 'Slow Boat on Rum Row' documents the men and the ships of a little-known period in west coast history. It also pays funny and fascinating tribute to the unsung heroes of an inglorious industry. After all, 'Rum runners, as a group',writes Fraser Miles, 'made the sphinx sound like a chatterbox'." - from th e dj. Very good in crisp dustjacket. 25.00

Some years ago I heard that Forbes Magazine was putting together a collection of toy boats and later I was privileged to visit it. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1980, ISBN:0521233305
MILL, John Stuart. Mill on Bentham and Coleridge. With an introduction by F.R. Leavis. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, (1980). First Cambridge Printing. Pp. (6),1-167,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "John Stuart Mill described Bentham and Coleridge as 'the two great seminal minds' of early nineteenth-century England. Coleridge, who asserted the primacy of the transcendant imagination, was in an obvious sense the directopposite of Bentham, the resolute proponent of Utilitarianism; but Mill, w hile recognizing the separateness of their creeds, appreciated both and sawboth as necessary to the intellectual vigour of the nation. Mill's major e ssays on Bentham and Coleridge were first published in The Westminster Review, in 1838 and 1840 respectively. In his substantial introduction to them here F.R. Leavis argues that they are essential documents for an understanding of Victorian culture; he traces their influence on the thinking of Dickens, George Eliot and Matthew Arnold, and examines their significance for contemporary principles of liberal education." - from the dust jacket.
