MOORE, Lorrie. Birds of America : Stories. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1998. First Edition. Pp (16),[5]-291,(1). 8vo, pale grey hardcover (paper-covered boards), gilt lettering to spine.

Lorrie Moore (née Marie Lorena Moore; b. January 13, 1957, Glens Fall, New York) is an American fiction writer.

"A long-awaited collection of stories--twelve in all-- by one of the most exciting writers at work today, the acclaimed author of Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? and Self-Help. Stories remarkable in their range, emotional force, and dark laughter, and in the sheer beauty and power of their language.

From the opening story, "Willing"--about a second-rate movie actress in her thirties who has moved back to Chicago, where she makes a seedy motel room her home and becomes involved with a mechanic who has not the least idea ofwho she is as a human being - Birds of America unfolds a startlingly brilli ant series of portraits of the unhinged, the lost, the unsettled of our America.

In the story "Which Is More Than I Can Say About Some People" ("Thereis nothing as complex in the world--no flower or stone--as a single hello from a human being"), a woman newly separated from her husband is on a long-planned trip through Ireland with her mother. When they set out on an expedition to kiss the Blarney Stone, the image of wisdom and success that her mother has always put forth slips away to reveal the panicky woman she really is.

In "Charades," a family game at Christmas is transformed into a hilarious and insightful (and fundamentally upsetting) revelation of crumbling family ties.

In "Community Life,"a shy, almost reclusive, librarian, Transylvania-born and Vermont-bred, moves in with her boyfriend, the local anarchist in a small university town, and all hell breaks loose. And in "Four Calling Birds, Three French Hens," a woman who goes through the stages of grief as she mourns the death of her cat (Anger, Denial, Bargaining, Häagen Dazs, Rage) is seen by her friends as really mourning other issues: the impending death of her parents, the son she never had, Bosnia.

In what may be her most stunning book yet, Lorrie Moore explores the personal and the univers al, the idiosyncratic and the mundane, with all the wit, brio, and verve that have made her one of the best storytellers of our time." (from the dj).

The twelve stories:
"Willing";
"Which Is More Than I Can Say About Some People"
"Dance in America";
"Community Life";
"Agnes of Iowa";
"Charades";
"Four Calling Birds, Three French Hens";
"Beautiful Grade";
"What You Want to Do Fine";
"Real Estate'";
"People Like That Are the Only People Here: Canonical Babbling in Peed Onk"; and "Terrific Mother.'

Pp (4),[v]-viii,(2),[1]-152, frontispiece portraitof Cripps. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This is the story of a missed opportunity. In his sequel to The Crisis of Indian Unity, 1917-19 40 (1974) Professor Moore argues that Sir Stafford Cripps's mission to India in 1942 could, if successful, have prevented the ultimate partition of India. Indian participation in a power-sharing executive would have led to co-operation between Hindus and Muslims. The failure of the mission can be attributed to the baleful influence of Churchill, acting in support of the over-cautious and often stubborn Viceroy, Lord Linlithgow." (from the dj). Contents : 1. Random House Canada, Toronto, 2003, ISBN:0679312021
MOORE, Robert. A Time to Die : The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy. [Mississauga, ON]: Random House Canada, (2003). First Printing. Pp 271 + [8] pp of plates. 8vo, black paper covered boards. An account of the deadliest submarine disaster in history. Moore, who had exclusive access to top Russian military figures, presents a detailed chronicle of the heroic attempts to rescue the 23 remaining crew members. "At 11:28 A.M. on Saturday, August 12,2000, high in the Arctic Circle, under the roiling surface of the Barents Sea, Captain Gennady Lyachin was taking the Kursk, pride of Russia's elite Northern Fleet, through the last steps of firing a practice torpedo, part of an elaborate naval exercise. Suddely, the torpedo exploded in a massive fireball, instantly incinerating all seven men in the submarine's forward compartment. The horror, however, was just beginning. The full, gripping story of the remarkable drama inside the Kursk and all of the desperate rescue efforts has never been told - until now. In A Time to Die, a critically acclaimed bestseller in the United Kingdom, international reporter Robert Moore - who covered the Kursk tragedy from Russia as it happened - draws on exclusive access he obtained to top Russian military figures in telling the inside story of the disaster with the factual depth of the best journalism and the compelling moment-by-moment tension of a thriller. He takes us right down inside the Kursk as two massive explosions - the second measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale - rip through compartment after compartment. Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2007, ISBN:9780300117189
MOORE, Susan Hardman. Pilgrims : New World Settlers & the Call of Home. NewHaven and London : Yale University Press, (2007). First Printing. Pp (8),[ ix]-xii,(4),[1]-316,(4),+ 16 pp plates. Map. Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Thousands of pilgrims in the seventeenth century crossed the Atlantic to New England. Their tale is traditionally one of heroic exile for faith and freedom, but there is a darker side to this story: perhaps as manv as one in four abandoned the New World to return home. Pilgrims uncovers the life histories of the striking number of colonists who left New Englad during the British Civil Wars and Interregnum, 1640-60. The complex reasons that spurred them to brave the Atlantic again - the allure of revolutionary England, an eye for profit, the workings of Providence, the callof home - show much more was at stake than simply failing to settle. Their stories challenge our perceptions of early colonialism; America was a stag e in their journey, not an end in itself. Drawing on extensive original research into the lives of hundreds of migrants, Susan Hardman Moore explores their motives for setting out from England in the 1630s, their experiences in America, and their fortunes back home. Pilgrims presents a vivid accountof the nature and significance of the New England experiment, and offers a tresh vantage point from which to survey the seventeenth-century Atlantic horizon." (from the dj). Contents : Prologue: the story of Susanna Bell. 1.Exodus from England. 2. The creation of the New England way. 3. Unsettled spirits. 4. A fresh gale towards Europe. 5. Parting from America. 6. A taleof three nations. 7. The New England way in England. 8. Journey's end. App endix 1 : Pilgrims, Puritans, migrants. "It was on the evening of the 16th day of April, 1829, -- the very day on which the memorable news reached Dublin of the Royal Assent having been given to the Catholic Relief Bill,-- that, as I was sitting alone in my chambers, up two pair of stairs, Tri nity College, being myself one of the everlasting 'Seven Millions' thus liberated, I started suddenly, after a few moments' reverie, from my chair, and taking a stride across the room, as if to make trial of a pair of emancipated legs, exclaimed, 'Thank God! I may now, if I like, turn Protestant.'".- from p.[9]. Deemed one of the more "impudent productions that have ever been intruded on the patience of the public" by the Dublin University Magazine [Volume 2, 1833, p.101], the Irish poet and scholar embarks on a journey towards becoming a Protestant; but after undergoing intense study of bothScripture and the writings of early Church Fathers, is unable to find enou gh reason to justify changing faiths. Little, Brown, Boston, 1979, ISBN:0316580600 1979 0316580600
MOORHOUSE, Geoffrey. The Boat and the Town. Boston [and] Toronto : Little Brown and Company, (1979). First US Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-x,(2),[3]-275,(3). 8vo, black cloth spine with blue paper-covered boards, silver lettering to spine. With map end-papers.

"For a year, Geoffrey Moorhouse worked as a deep-sea fisherman, sailing out of a New England port to harvest the rich bounty of George's Bank, 200 miles off the coast of North America. Out of his experience he has written The Boat and the Town: at once a detailed documentary, a hauntingly lyrical narrative, and an ageless tale of fishermen and their people that might have told of any port in the Western world.

The Boat is the center of existence for those facing the hazards of their trade aboard or those anxiously waiting ashore for it to bring the men and their catch safely back from the ocean fastness. The seasons change, but the patterns of this existence remain essentially the same. For outsiders who see the Boat returning to the Town after a fortnight away at sea, to lie calmly at her moorings, it is difficult to understand what the voyage has meant for all those whose lives are bound to this small vessel: the anguish of those on shore who have waited through a terrible storm; the stupefying exhaustion of the fishermen who have been hauling and setting trawls in subzero cold on thrashing seas; the comradeship tested and the flaring tempers among close-quartered crew members; the sorrow at the loss of a crewmate to the engulfing deep.

There is anger shared by all when an oil slick spoils 270 miles of fertile fishing grounds and a remote government agency dictates the politics of the sea. There is the piety that turns the Town into a carnival on the Feast of St Peter the Fisherman, and the longing that men and women have when they are separated by the sea. Above all, there is an abiding sense of wonder in the face of the vast, primordial sea.

Brilliant reportage of life aboard a small, modern deep-sea fishing boat, and an evocation of a life as archetypal as the cowboy's, The Boat and the Town is no less perceptive in its picture of an evolving town — its life and fortunes defined by the sea. Here the original Yankees have been displaced by the Portuguese, who are in turn yielding to the Italians. Now, Americans all, they are affected by the international fleets of factory ships offshore, the dynamics of big business, and the government that must try to mediate the interests of all. The Boat and the Town is an achievement on several levels." - from the dj.

"No one who knows New England will have any diifficulty in recognizing the Town, but he should not look for my characters there, for they are not to be found. If he is frustrated because I have not because I have not properly named the place, I hope he will at least accept my intention. I have seen the Town as a paradigm of all the fishing communities in the world, and I have wished to express this by the device ot anonymity. I salute them all." - p.x.

The text is arranged by the seasons : Summer - Fall - Winter - Spring.

Geoffrey Moorhouse, né Heald, FRGS, FRSL, D.Litt (b. November 29, 1931, Bolton, Lancashire – d. November 26, 2009, Wensleydale, North Yorkshire) was an English journalist and author.

"In 1976 Geoffrey Moorhouse went to a small town in New England to live as a deep-sea fisherman there. For the next twelve months he worked as a deckhand with four other men aboard a boat which caught fish on Georges Bank, 200 miles off the coast of North America. Then he came home and wrote his most ambitious book yet. It is both a documentary account and an imaginative reconstruction of a year in the life of a fishing community. Though it happens to be set in New England, it is a tale that might be told about fishermen and their people anywhere in the Western world. The Boat is the center of their existence, whether they facing the hazards of their trade aboard it or whether they simply wait ashore for it to bring the fish and the men safely back from the deep sea. The seasons change, but the pattern of this existence remain essentially the same. Outsiders who see The Boat returning to harbourafter ten days or a fortnight away from home cannot understand the significance of this for all those whose lives are attached to it. For the fishing people there is the anguish of waiting in time of terrible storm that can obliterate a boat and leave no trace. There is the stupefying exhaustion of working in weather so cold that icicles hang from a man's eyebrows as he stumbles about on the deck. There is the anger that comes when a tanker breaks up and leaves an oil slick spoils 270 miles long across the fishing grounds. There is the rough comradeship aboard and the tensions that sometimes flare up between members of the crew. There is the tenderness and sense of wonder. There is the piety that turns The Town into a carnival on the Feast of St. Peter the Fisherman. And a longing that men and women have when they are separated by The Boat." - from the dj. I salute them all." - p.8.

The text is arranged by the seasons : Summer - Fall - Winter - Spring.

Pp (8),9-[288], frontispiece. 8vo, green cloth, silver crest to front board, silver lettering to spine. "There are few people, even within the United Kingdom, who realise the tremendous part played by the Police Force in the fight against the Communist scourge in Malaya. (Figures show that, up to the end of 1956,2,890 police had been killed in action, against the Military Forces total of 518, during which time the Communist casualties totalled 11,718, of which 8,678 were bagged by the police jungle forces.) Spearhead In Malaya is autobiograpaphical. It is factual, critical and revealing; it has humour, butit has more of the deadly sdy serious; here is grimness and intense excite ment. J. W. G. Moran, who was recently invalided out of the Malava Police Force, holds little backas he describes the difficult and sometimes appalling conditions under which he and his native subordinates had to live and fight. It is a book that makes one proud to realise the extent of the work that is done by indomitable, unsung heroes. As the author closes his preface: "Heroes may come and heroes may go, but to me the true hero of Malaya - andof this bok - is the ordinary down-to-earth 'mata-mata'—the policeman." (f rom the dj). Northwestern University Press, Evanston, 1968,
MORDECAI, John, Sir. The West Indies : The Federal Negotiations. Epilogue by W. Arthur Lewis. Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1968. First Printing. Pp. (10),[11]-484. Map endpapers. 8vo, blue cloth with silver lettering to spine, top edge dyed a pale blue. "This is the history of Federationin the British West Indies since the 1920's, in itself a fascinating story full of strong and colourful personalities; at the same time it offers an incisive analysis ofthe reasons why Federations have proved so unstable in the post-war world. It is unusual to have the story from a man who was bothwithout any narrow allegiance and at the centre of events from 1952 up to the very end. Sir John Mordecai was in daily contact throughout with the leading figures and the crises surrounding them. He served as Secretary-General of the West Indies Regional Economic Committee which prepared the organic structure for political union and as Federal Secretary and chief officialwhen parliamentary government and a Council of Ministers took control in 1 958. As Deputy Governor General he summoned the Cabinet early on 20th September, 1961, to face the calamitous result of the Jamaican referendum the day before. And he was at the Cabinet table when Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies pronounced his Government's decision to have the Federation dissolved." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1. "Rural Roots is a new book written by Ralph Morehouse [...]. In this autobiography he outlines, in a direct and clear style, the influences on his life from family, educators, work associates, organizations and friends. Many associated with agriculture in general, and the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing in particular, will identify with the events and developments contained in these recollections. The early years, prior to studies at NSAC, contain insights into a rural life style characteristic of many Nova Scotians who lived on small farms in the 1930s. Several issues and approaches for improving agricultural services are noted in his treatment of the recent years, just prior to his retirement, when he served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. Typical of his modesty, Mr. Morehouse had a relatively small number of the books printed. - from N.S.A.C. Post, Vol. 10 No. 3, August, 1995.
