Because his 'dialectical critical realism' is systematic , ontologically sustained and self-consciously ethical and political, he isable to give stunning readings of key chapters in the history of philosoph y. This is a unique book full of gems." - Peter Manicas (quoted on the backcover). "In this stunning book, Roy Bhaskar develops his own programme of critical realism into a radically new and original theory of dialectics anda critique of previous theories from the ancient Greeks to twentieth centu ry neo-Marxism. The result is comparable in its scope and ambition to Sartre's critique of dialectical reasoning. It is hard to think of any other contemporary philosopher with the powers to bring this off." - William Outhwaite (quoted on the back cover). Very good. 30.00

Vikas Publishing House Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kanpur, 1979, ISBN:0706908074
BHUTTO, Zulfikar Ali. "If I am Assassinated".. With an introduction by PranChopra. New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kanpur : Vikas Publishing House Pvt Ltd, (1979). Second Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xxxvi,[1]-234,(2). 8vo,black cloth, red lettering to spine. "This book nearly perished. It was bl acked out in Pakistan. Its publication was banned. The press in which Bhutto's counsel tried to have it printed was sealed. But anonymous enterprise smuggled it out of the "stinking death cell" in which the former President and Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto wrote it, "with the paperresting on my knee." This book contains the text of a document presented b y Bhutto to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in his appeal against the death sentence passed on him by the Lahore High Court. The disclosures were too dangerous, too sensational for the Pakistan rulers to face publicly. He accused them of conspiring with a foreign power, of being bribed by it to overthrow him because of the popularity he enjoyed among his own people. He clearly hints at the USA and some other countries too. He names names and specific sums and makes his appeal a classic case of the accused putting the accuser in the dock. Bhutto knew Pakistan as no one else did, and impending death had made his insights even sharper; it also made him more fearless in tearing the veil off what went on in Pakistan under its 3 military Presidents, General Ayub, General Yahya, and General Zia. The result is the most revealing book on Pakistan to be published yet." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. 1. White Paper or White Lies. 2. Misrepresentation. 3. "Warfare,"Rigging and Fraud. 4. The Election Commission. 5. The Government Machine. 6. The "Larkana Plan". 7. Rigged or Fair? 8. The Inner Cancer. 9. The External Crisis. 10. Death Knell. 11. Foreign Hand. 12. The Death Cell and History. 13. The Hour has Struck. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the ninth Prime Minister of Pakistan and its fourth President. Revered as Quaid-i-Awam, he founded the Pakistan People's Party and served as its chairman until his execution in 1979. He was the father of Pakistan's 11th Prime Minster, Benazir Bhutto. BIENEK, Horst. The Cell. Introduction by Daniel Berrigan. Translated from the German by Ursula Mahlendorf. (Toronto): McClelland and Stewart Limited, (1973). Second Printing, thus. Pp. (6),[i]-viii,(6),9-93,(7). 8vo, blue-grey cloth with black lettering and decoration to front board, black letteringto spine. Spadoni & Donnelly 2414. "The theme of 'The Cell' is, on one pla ne, that of a prisoner confined alone in his cell, but the reader quickly senses that the cell is also the world, the broader theme that of the nameless Lazarus, Twentieth Century man, his cell the universe. We never learn the prisoner's name, nor of what crime he is accused. We learn only of his existential life in the cell. Of what he does to go on living day after day, day running into night, in his solitary confinement. His body, attacked by abcesses, gradually disintegrates, eventually confines him still more: to the straw pallet on his cot. Yet his spirit does not disintegrate; that is the mysterious power of this book. Experimental in form -- Bienek creates his form to suit his subject matter --, the novel is also concerned with Timeand Memory, a contemporary neo-Proustian concept. Its treatment in 'The Ce ll' lead reader and critic to feel that here is a work which is not only significant in its universality but one which is, as well, avant garde in thetruest meaning of those much misused words." - from the dj. BIGELOW, Arthur Lynds. Carillon : An Account of the Class of 1892 Bells at Princeton with Notes on Bells and Carillons in General. Princeton, New Jersey : Princeton University Press, 1948. First Edition. Pp. (8),ix-x,(6),3-73, (1) 75-[91],(1) + 12 pages of b&w photos. 8vo, grey cloth, with gilt lettering in blue-green field to spine.

Arthur Lynds Bigelow (b. 1910, Springfield, Massachusetts - d. 1967) of Princeton University, a world-renowned "campanologist".

"Written by one of the world's great bell-masters, this book on bells gives the complete story — from the tintinnabulum of the ancients to the mightiest of all musical instruments, the carillon.

The author, bell-master of the town of Louvain for six years before the recent war, has held the same position at Princeton for the past eight years and was responsible for the reorganization of the 1892 Carillon and the addition of the 14 treble bells. He tells the story of these Princeton bells from their founding in England two decades ago to the renovation and enlargement which has earned this instrument a foremost place among the carillons of the world.

An authority on the technical aspects of bell-founding as well as on the history of bells and bell towers throughout Europe, Mr. Bigelow answers in this book all the questions on bells and carillons that might be asked by the casual listener, trained musician, engineer, and music historian — why a bell is shaped as it is, how it is hung, what accounts for its tone; what is change ringing, pealing, a chime tune, carillon music, what are the advantages and disadvantages of electrical operation.

A final chapter describes the development of the carillon in America, and a chart furnished information on all the major instruments in the United States and Canada." (from the dj).
