42903 PATTERSON, Frank H. Tatamagouche, N.S. 1771-1824
1971,
PATTERSON, Frank H. Tatamagouche, N.S. 1771-1824. Truro, N.S. : n. pub., 1971. First Edition. Pp (1),[I]-X,[1]-162,(1) leaves of typescript. 4to, printed blue cardcovers with black cloth-tape spine.

"The period of which I have tried to write had its beginning when its first permanent settlers came to Tatamagouche from Lunenburg in the spring or early summer of 1771. I think that 1824 is a logical year to call an end to that period for in that year Col. F.W.W. DesBarres died and his death marked the end of his futile plans to establish at Tatamagouche a manor estate after the manner of an English landlord. Then, too, in the same year Wellwood Waugh, the first Scotch settler at Tatamagouche died and with the passing of DesBarres and Waugh, Tatamagouche thereafter never was the same. So, if the story of Tatamagouche is ever to be told, even in part, the names of Waugh and DesBarres must always be found therein. Nor, of course, can the story of Tatamagouche be a story at all without its ttelling, as much as we know, of the long, hard story of the men from Montbeliard." - from [p.1].

University College of Cape Breton Press, Inc., Sydney, 2003, ISBN:092033685x
PATTERSON, Paul and Susan BIAGI. The Loom of Change : Weaving a New Economyon Cape Breton. Sydney, NS: University College of Cape Breton Press, Inc., (2003). Pp. (1),2-421,(3). Illustrated with numerous charts and diagrams. 8vo, ill. card covers, black titles to spine. A look at the expansive exploration of the nature of development in Cape Breton. "Rich in resources and rich in resourceful, creative people, Cape Breton Island was, for centuries, at the forefront of North American industrial expansion. Late in the 20thCentury, declining prices, rising costs and political deicision-making fav ouring industrial centres to the west caused the near catastrophic collapseof Cape Breton's mainstay economies: coal, steel and the fishery. Unpreced ented government intervention in development created an unhealthy economic dependency on Crown Corporations and a string of failed industrial-model enterprises. 'The Loom of Change' is an expansive exploration of the nature of development. Examining Cape Breton, Patterson and Biagi expose weaknessesin the mechanisms of centralized policy, then explain the complexities of development based on creativity and innovation and how economies may be woven by communities rather than accepted off-the-rack." - from the rear cover. Illustrated. Index. 8vo, pale green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. In the History of American Science and Technology Series. "Granville Sharp Pattison provides a detailed account of one of the most colorful and complex characters in early nineteenth-centurymedicine. Pattison was proud, arrogant, and aggressive, yet he was one of the most outstanding anatomists, surgeons, and teachers of the day. He occupied five chairs of anatomy and was the founding professor at the University of London and New York University. Pattison demonstrated an abrasive character and a rare genius for fomenting trouble and dissension. By the age oftwenty-seven he had already been tried before the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh for grave robbery, accused at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary of unprofessional conduct, and named as the paramour in the divorce proceedings of a university colleague. Later, he became embroiled in controversies with his medical colleagues in Philadelphia, culminating in pamphlet wars anda pistol duel. During his tenure in the chair of anatomy at the University of London, he was the central figure n such wrangling among colleagues and students that he was formally dismissed after four years of service. Yet d uring all these troubles, he attracred and inspired a large band of loyal medical students and was always active in furthering tne cauae of the various universities with which he was associated. He campaigned successfully in support of the Anatomy Act of 1832, which elminated grave robbery as a profession, and was the founder of one of the first modern residential teachinghospitals in the United States." She has contrived her ballads around some of the most colourful characters of the Boundary Country, and beyond. She was born and raised in this part of British Columbia, which is, in fact, that area barely north of the 49th parallel, stretching roughly from Rock Creek to Grand Forks. "The Boundary" produced a hearty breed of individuals and Ann is one of them -- though of a later vintage. PAUL, Daniel N. We Were Not the Savages : A Micmac Perspective on the Collision of European and Aboriginal Civilization. (Halifax, NS) : Nimbus Publishing Ltd, (1993). First Edition. Pp (4),[v]-viii,[1]-360. Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated orange-brown card covers.

Daniel N. Paul, CM ONS (b. December 1938, Indian Brook Reserve, Nova Scotia).

"Although the history of the 'discovery' of America and its colonization by Europeans has been well documented and consistently taught in schools across the continent, one side of that story has never been told. That is the impact of the Peoples who inhabited North America for some ten thousand years before the arrival of the White man, and whose civilizations have barely survived the onslaught of European colonization.

'We Were Not the Savages', the first history of the confrontation between the Micmac and the Europeans written from the Micmac point of view, attempts to right this wrong. It is an uncompromising narrative of how a democraftic and peaceful people were brought to the edge of extinction by an arrogant and brutal enemy. In the telling, author Daniel N. Paul presents a new interpretation of the past, calling into question our very understanding of civilization. His re-examination of original historical records casts doubts on early military and political figures we honour as heros, and brings us face to face with the question of who were really the savages." - from the rear cover.

Although many Nazis, most notably Hitler himself, were Austrians, and although the roots of National Socialism began well before the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire following WW1, this victory was not easy. It was the result of a long internecine power struggle between party factions and ambitious individuals as well as the intervention of the German Wehrmacht. Hitler and the Forgotten Nazis is the first book devoted exclusively to the history of Austrian National Socialism from its germinationin the time of Georg von Schonerer in the 1880s to the German takeover of Austria in 1938. It reveals the social composition of the Austrian Nazis, their leadership problems, the reasons for the party's slow growth in the 1920s, the impact of the Great Depression on the party, and the extent of Nazi terror. It also analyzes the party's propaganda, the structure and activities of the Austrian SS and SA, the German Nazis; inability to control the Austrian party, and the contribution of the Austrian Nazis to the Anschlussof March 1938.” (from the dj). Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine. "The practice of modern biological research has been shaped, in large part, by the interests and attitudes of nineteenth and early twentieth-century scientists. This book describes the career of one such influential figure, the German-American researcher Jacques Loeb, whose novel and radical emphasis on reductionist experimentation continues to exert an impact on the field today. Loeb (1859-1924) worked at the University of Chicago, the University of California, the Rockefeller Institute, and was a regular member of the Wood's Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. The author convincingly argues that Loeb's desire to control organisms, manifestedin studies of both reproduction and animal behavior, helped to define a ne w selt-image for biologists. Pauly places Loeb's experiments and the controversies they generated in their intellectual and institutional contexts, and traces his influence on the development of behavior!sm, genetics, and reproductive biology. An important contribution to scientific biography, this accessible study will interest biologists, historians of science, and general readers interested in the history of science." (from the dj). Walker & Company, New York, 1961,
PAVESE, Cesare. The Burning Brand : Diaries, 1935-1950. Translated by A.E. Murch (with Jeanne Molli). Introduction by Frances Keene. New York: Walker & Company, (1961). First US Printing. Pp. (6),7-368. 8vo, black cloth spinewith blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine. "In 1950, shortly after h e had won Italy's highest literary award, the Strega Prize, Cesare Pavese committed suicide. Shocked and bewildered, his friends tried to find the explanation for the tragic act. Some suggested that the explanation lay in Pavese's disillusionment with Communism. Others more intimately involved in Pavese's private life believed the reason might be found in his unhappy love affair with an American film star: it had been a painful and protracted agony. (When told of his suicide, she remarked with chilling insularity, 'I didn't know he was such a famous writer' -- a bitter and ironic epitaph whichmight have been written by Pavese himself). The truth lay deeper. It was o nly revealed when Pavese's private Diaries were brought to light. For the Diaries revealed a tormented man struggling to come to terms with an alien environment and to achieve that most elusive of conditions, an emotional maturity consistent with a poet's sensibility. In this quest, Pavese failed. He was a man in whose life the threat of suicide was always implicit, and sometimes explicit. Above all, and despite his extraordinarily powerful intellect, he was a man who sought, until the bitter end, for a 'perfect love'. His Diaries reveal the succession of harrowing disappointments that he met along the way with frankness and a pitiless self-analysis." - from the dustjacket. 42987 PAVLENKO, Pyotr Soviet Novelettes series Voice on the Way (Novelettes)
Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1954,
PAVLENKO, Pyotr. The Voice on the Way (Novelettes). Moscow : Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1954. Pp (6),7-[103],(1). Small 8vo, illustrated tan card covers, French flaps, with a blank white spine. In the Soviet Novelettes series. "This book contains five short stories by the Soviet author Pyotr Pavlenko. The Power of a Word is a short story in which the hero's name is not mentioned. It was inspired by a Soviet folk-lore tale about Joseph Stalin. The Rains has Orlov, a stove-setter, for its hero. It shows the pridehe takes in his trade, and the effort he makes to regain his reputation wi th those who have lost faith in his skill. It is an illustration of the nature of Soviet man, who is capable of overcoming any difficulty in serving the community. The Bread of Life describes the thrill Anna Maximovna Ptitsyna, a collective farmer and a candidate for Deputy, experienced during an unusual meeting with her electors. The rough copy of An Unfinished Story gives three alternative titles: Letters of Love, Loyalty, and The Family. The author did not make his final choice before he died. He rewrote this short story of love, friendship and a Soviet family several times, seeking to improve its form even shortly before his death. It was published in its latest version. The Voice on the Way is the story of an incident that befell the author as he was returning one night from Bakhchisarai to Yalta by way of Al-Petri Pass. In it he sings man's tireless aspiration to move onward." (from the front flap). Pyotr Andreyevich Pavlenko (1899 - 1951), was a Soviet writer, screenwriter and war correspondent. He became a member of the CPSU in 1920. Rubbed, else very good. 35.00

PAYERLE, George. Unknown Soldier. Toronto : Macmillan of Canada, (1987). First Edition. Pp (8),1-331,(11). 8vo, taupe hardcovers, gilt lettering to spine. "Sam Collister went to war when he was nineteen, and returned to Canada six years later with an English bride and an indelible memory of battlefield horror. His experiences have made him a hero who hates war, a reiuctantwarrior for whom the banalities of peacetime society are intolerable. Full of pain and rage, haunted by the recurring vision of his best friend's cru el death in a frozen Belgian feld, Sam nears his sixtieth birthday birthdayalone me as he lives out a marginal life in the bars and rooming houses of Victoria. Long estranged from his wife and only son, able to talk only to the few veterans who share his anguished memories, he meets Lily, a woman whose love could release him from his tortured limbo, if he coul from his tortured limbo, if he could bring himself to let it. Sam's iournev to confront the past, to accept love instead of turning from it, and to embrace—however tentatively—a hopeful future is the story of a shattered soul's struggleto become whole again. Unknown Soldier is a powerful novel of war and peac e, love and death, hell and redemption, of the passing of life from the oldto the young and of the immediacy of history in all our lives. Written in densely layered prose, it tells Sam's story in the lyrical, uncompromising, often brutal terms of the man who is living it. A celebration of the human spirit in the face of inconceivable horror, Unknown Soldier is ultimately an impassioned plea for an end to all war." - from the dj flap. Fine in fine dustjacket.
