Davy's health was poor, and a series of misfortunes led them to purchase a roadhouse on Stewart Island, at the juncture of the Stewart River with the Yukon. Though a small community, this was an important stopping and transfer point, and here Peggy maintained herself for over thirty years, even after Davy's death. At her hotel, all were welcome — rich and poor, miners and trappers, nunsand dancing girls, missionaries and the Mounted Police. SHANDLER, Nina. The Strange Case of Hellish Nell : The Story of Helen Duncan and the Witch Trial of World War II. (Cambridge, MA) : Da Capo Press, (2006). First Printing. Pp [i]-xiv,1-289,(1),+ 8 pp plates. Index 8vo, green cloth spine, light brown paper covered boards, red lettering to spine. "On March 23, 1944, as the Allied Forces were preparing for D-Day, Helen Duncan--"Nell" to her six children and four grandchildren and "Hellish Nell" to her detractors--stood in the dock of Britain's highest criminal court accusedof:witchcraft! At the time of her arrest, Helen Duncan was Britain's most controversial psychic, a celebrity medium with a notorious reputation. During her seances, she channeled spirits who spoke from the world beyond, and on a few occasions, her "spirit" seemed to know too much: Helen's seances were accurately revealing top-secret British ship movements. Intelligence authorities wanted "Hellish Nell" silenced. Using diaries, personal papers, interviews, and declassified documents, Nina Shandler resurrects this strange episode and explores the unanswered questions surrounding the trial: Did "Hellish Nell" channel spirits of the dead who gave away wartime secrets? Was she a calculating charlatan or the innocent target of obsessive wartime secrecy? Why did the Director of Public Prosecutions try her as a witch, and not a spy? Sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, The Strange Case of HellishNell is a true crime tale laced with psychic phenomena and wartime intrigu e." - from the dj. SHANKLAND, E.C. Dredging of Harbours and Rivers : A Work of Descriptive andTechnical Reference Combining Hydrography, Dredging, Hydraulics and Seaman ship. With Illustrations and Plans. Glasgow : Brown, Son & Ferguson, Limited, Nautical Publishers, 1931, Pp [i]-xii,[1]-248,(6, ads),+ plates (some folding). Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine, blind-stamped lettering to front board. “Some literary works exist dealing with the design, mechanism and general functions of dredgers, but on the hydrography and economics of dredging practice there appear to be few, if any, works of reference. In view of these deficiencies, this book, constructed largely from experience of actual dredging projects, is offered as a contribution to the subject. The collection of data was commenced before 1914 over a period of several years when the writer's services were joined with the survey and dredging of Plymouth Sound. Later, the notes were revived, and when at the Port of London associated with a dredging scheme measured by a channel improvement of 56 million cubic yards – the data were amplified. More recently on representations that the notes would be of value to the young hydrographic engineer a decision to publish was made.” (p. 1). SHAPIRO, Irwin. How Old Stormalong Captured Mocha Dick. Story by Irwin Shapiro. Pictures by Donald McKay. New York: Julian Messner, Inc., 1942. Pp.(3),4-[48]. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, decorated grey cloth with blue titles to front and spine. "Sweeping throughthe pages of this exciting book like a thirty-mile gale, the exploits of Stormalong Alfred Bulltop travel at a terrific pace. Ever since the great days of the Yankee clippers American seamen have told tales of Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, the legendary sailor who stood four fathoms tall in his stocking feet. Since that time, too, tales have been told of Mocha Dick, the great white whale which roamed the waters of the Pacific. But here for the first time is the story of what ha ppened when they met, and how Old Stormalong left Captain Joshua Skinner's good ship Dolphin because if he couldn't get the kinks out of his muscles he couldn't capture Mocha Dick, and if he couldn't capture Mocha Dick he wasno whaler, and if he was no whaler he was no sailor, and if he was no sail or his place was on land. In the woods Old Stormalong did deeds that rival Paul Bunyan's, and in the West he was almost as great a cowboy as Pecos Bill. How he returned to see and again took up his feud with the great white whale makes a stirring climax to this salty, rollicking story, told in the grand tradition of the American tall tale." - from the dust jacket. SHARMA, Yojana. Te Buffalo Thief. London [et al] : Doubleday, (1999). FirstBritish Printing. Pp (6),7-480. 8vo, purple cloth, gilt lettering to spine . "Jhotta the buffalo lives in the small Ganges town of Mardpur. She is looked after by little Deepa and her blind grandmother Amma, who is renowned for her stories and visions. Idyllically happy, Jhotta produces a rich, creamy milt from which Amma makes the most delicious yoghurt. But Amma has forseen her own death and urgently wants a story to be told - a tale of princesand rajahs, smugglers and hidden treasure. All she needs is a suitable wri ter. Raman feels blesed by good fortune. Why struggle like his sari-tradingbrothers? The family lychee orchard and his work for the town's journalist are enough. His contentment is abruptly ended , however, by his formidable sister-in-law, Sudha-with-Pension. Who will provide proper dowries for his twin daughters Meera and Mamta? His problems seem insoluble, until a visit to mhis acquaintance Amma and a bowl of Jhotta's yoghurt suddenly change e verything. Raman will write a novel, a bestseller, no less. It will be hardenough to overcome the town's disbelief, his family's opposition and the r ivalry of a scheming Brahmin. But can Raman also secure a supply of the yoghurt that seems to have such a miraculous effect on his creative powers? Inan absorbing, richly populated narrative, Yojana Sharma surveys the obsess ions of small-town India - class, caste and property - with a wry, msu[bversive eye. Told with the deceptive charm of a fable, The Buffalo Thief brings Mardpur vividly to life in an acutely observed and witty portrait of an India struggling to adapt its romantic past and village traditions to the coming of the modern age. It is an ambitious and impressive début from a talented new writer." (from the dj). Yojana Sharma grew up in London and New Delhi. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1994, ISBN:0802005454
SHARP, Mitchell. Which Reminds Me... : A Memoir. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, (1994). Second Prining. Pp. (6),[vii]-xv,(3),[3]-288, + 8 pages of plates. 8vo, green cloth, black lettering to spine. Foreword by the Honourable Jean Chretien. "Mitchell Sharp is best remembered as one of the most unpolitical of politicians -- a public servant somehow co-opted into thepolitical sphere without ever acquiring a partisan patina. In this engagin g memoir, Sharp contemplates the unexpected turns of his public life, combining narrative with reflection on the nature of public service, and the nature of policy over the forty-five years of his career in government. Sharp gives a vivid picture of what it was like to grow up in depression-era Winnipeg, where he put himself throuhg university while holding a full-time joband trained as an economist at a time when the breed was scarce. Sharp's c areer took him into the Ottawa mandarinate in the 1940s and 1950s, the the Toronto corporate world, and then Lester Pearson's cabinet in 1963. Sharp'sexperience as a politician, which lasted until 1978, was not uncontroversi al: within the LIberal party he spoke for those who found Walter Gordon's nationalist economics impractical if not misleading. It was a clash of different styles, and different ideas, of Canadian nationalism -- a clash in which Sharp's ideas prevailed. Later, Sharp was the man on the spot during the1970 October crisis, and his description of those events adds significantl y to our understanding of what happened, and why. As external affairs minister from 1968 to 1974, Sharp reshaped Canadian foreign policy to decrease dependence on the United States by promoting a diversified economy with increased trade overseas. Sharp's memoir will engross any reader with an interest in Canada's political history of the last half century. Clearly written, and with Sharp's characteristic dry candour, the book brings the character s and circumstances of Canada's history to life. Sharp's reflections on therole of the senior civil service, on relations with the media, on the rise of the Canadian deficit, and on other issues should find a place on any re ading list concerned with the nature of Canadian government." - from the dustjacket. "This report is essentially an appraisal on behalf of the County of Strathcona of the merits of the case placedbefore the Local Authorities Board by the City of Edmonton in March 1979 f or the comprehensive adjustment of its boundaries as set out in the City's document 'The Basis of an Application by the City of Edmonton to the Local Authorities Board of the Province of Alberta.' This appication was also supported by a series of additional Reports by consultants concerning particular aspects of the application such as finacne, transportation, land-0use planning and so forth. In addition there were tow further rReports, the firstby Professors Lloyd Axworthy and James Lightbody ('The Reorganization of L ocal Government in the Metropolitan Edmonton Area') and the second by Professor T.J. Plunkett ('A Proposed Boundary for the Edmonton Metropolitan Areaand the Basis for an Appropriate Form of Government.') These two reports s et out the case on behalf of the City's application in general terms and cover the salient aspects of the City's case. Since this is also the focus ofthis Report, it will be necssarily devoted mainly to the case made in the Axworthy/Lightbody and Plunkett reports. The report falls into three parts:the first is a summary of the main elements of the City's case for change and its preferred solution as set out in its 'Basis of an Application' and two aforementioned consultants' reports. The second part consists of a critical examination of these main elements, and part III is a series of additional arguments against the City boundary claim that are not covered in partII." - from the introduction. Second Printing. Pp (6),[vii]-viii,(8),[3]-189,(5),+ 12 pp plates. Index. 8vo, red paper covered boards, black lettering to front board and spine. "In December 1883, Peter Lazier was shot in the heart during a bungled robbery at a Prince Edward County farmhouse. Three local men, pleading innocence from start to finish, were arrested and charged with his murder. Two of them — Joseph Thomset and David Lowder — were sentenced to death by a jury of local citizens the following May. Nevertheless, appalled community members believed at least one of them to be innocent — even pleading with prime minister John A. Macdonald to spare them from the gallows. The Lazier Murder explores a community's response to a crime, as well as the realization that it may have contributed to a miscarriage of justice. Robert J. Sharpe reconstructs and contextualizes the case using archival and contemporary newspaper accounts. The Lazier Murder provides an insightful look at the changing pattern of criminal justice in nineteenth-century Canada, and the enduring problem of wrongful convictions." (from the dj). Contents : 1. "On 11 November 1918, thelast day of the Great War, the Canadian Corps, led by Sir Arthur Currie, p roudly liberated Mons after more than four years of German occupation, reversing the loss of the town by the British in August 1914. But the push to Mons in the last weeks of the war had cost many lives, and long after the war ended Currie was blamed by many, including the flamboyant Sam Hughes, theformer minister of militia, for needlessly wasting lives. When the charge against Currie appeared in the Port Hope Evening Guide in 1927 in an editorial written by W.T.R. Preston, a veteran of a lifetime of journalistic and political wars, Currie was incensed. Against the advice of his friends he decided to sue for libel, and retained W.N. Tilley, KC, the leading lawyer of the day, to take his case." - from the rear cover. Very good. 22.00

Illustrated. 8vo, blue comb bound, white card covers, illustrated and lettered uin red to front cover. "Strange to relate, this is the first book ever to be written on The Magic Play,so far as I am aware. Although some hints regarding the problems arising f rom combining magic and drama were given in the chapter on "Climax" in Our Magic, unfortunately Maskelyne and Devant did not include the analysis of some of their own successful magical sketches, as illustrations of how they had been evolved. The chief impression which emerges from a study of magical sketches is that not only were most of fhem written and performed during the Maskelyne and Devant era, but that J.N. Maskelyne, Neil Maskelyne and David Devant, and their collaborators, were the chief writers of them, and actors in them. This was the period of fifty-four years, from1865, with the production of J. N. Maskelyne's "La Dame et La Gorilla", to 1919, when Uevant's "The Supreme Test", was rehearsed, though never publicly performed." (from the Introduction, p. 5).
