Some maps in text. 8vo, grey cloth with white lettering to front board and spine. A volume in The History of Canada series. "Perched atop a tall promontory, surrounded on three sides by the treacherous St. Lawrence River, Quebec City forms an almost impregnable natural fortress. But in 1759, with the Seven Years War raging around the globe, the capital city of New France came under attack. With the irascible British general James Wolfe in command, a force of more than a hundred shipscarrying nearly nine thousand men navigation the river , scaled the cliffs , and laid siege to the town in an audacious attempt to expel the French from North America forever. It would be a brutal battle, with British soldiers confronting the troops commanded by the French general, the marquis de Montcalm. They were on unfamiliar terrain and facing extreme weather, a colonial militia, and experienced First Nations warriors. Using original research and multiple perspectives, Dan Snow grippingly describes the events that would reshape North America and, eventually, change the British Empire forever. SNOWIE, J. Allan. The Bonnie : H.M.C.S. Bonaventure. Foreword by Vice-Admiral J.C. "Scruffy" O'Brien. Erin, Ontario : Boston Mills Press, (1987). First Edition. Pp (2),[3]-336. Illustrated throughout with drawings, b&w and colour photos and cartoons including one by Robert 'Bob' Chambers. Small folio, blue cloth, gilt lettering to front & spine.

"Canadians are often in search of their elusive identity — who are we? what are we? Operating a British-built ship and flying American-designed aircraft in a European NATO commitment, the 1,300 plus officers and men of HMCS Bonaventure were a magnificent microcosm ot Canadianism in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, carrying Canadian policy into the cold war between East and West.

Bonaventure was not always comfortable, the aircraft were not always serviceable, and the weather often made the whole job impossible, but, these Canadians persevered. They inhabited the often unliveable spaces of the ship and made it home. They wrought greater mission successes from the aircraft than did other nations and they held out against the North Atlantic with as much hardiness as their immigrant forefathers had shown in braving the New World's harsh climes.

In spite of having the world's longest coastline, Canada is not a maritime nation. Yet, given time and experience at sea, Canadians have stood second to none in naval ability as was proven during the Second World War. In naval aviation, it was proven during the era of Bonaventure." - from the dj.

SNOWIE, J. Allan. The Bonnie : H.M.C.S. Bonaventure. Foreword by Vice-Admiral J. C. "Scruffy" O'Brien. (Erin, ON) : Boston Mills Press, (1987). Pp (3),4-336. Illustrated throughout. 4to, blue cloth. "Bonaventure was not always comfortable, the aircraft were not always serviceable, and the weather often made the whole job impossible, but, these Canadians persevered. With appendices & a bibliography. Very good in lightly nicked dust jacket. Cornell University Press, Ithaca and London, 1984, ISBN:0801416574
SNYDER, Jack. The Ideology of the Offensive : Military Decision Making and the Disasters of 1914. Ithaca and London : Cornell University Press, (1984). First Edition. Pp (4),5-267,(5). Maps, Figures and Charts. Index. 8vo, orange cloth, black lettering to spine. In the Cornell Studies in Security Analysis series. "Jack Snyder's analysis of the attitudes of military planners in the years prior to the Great War offers new insight into the tragic miscalculations of that era and into their possible parallels in present-day war planning. By 1914, the European military powers had adopted offensive military strategies even though there was considerable evidence to support the notion that much greater advantage lay with defensive strategies. The author argues that organizational biases inherent in military strategists' attitudes make war more likely by encouraging offensive postures even when the motive is self-defense. Drawing on new historical evidence of the specific circumstances surrounding French, German, and Russian strategic policy, Snyder demonstrates that it is not only rational analysis that determines strategic doctrine, but also the attitudes of military planners. Snyder argues that the use of rational calculation often falls victim to the pursuit oforganizational interests such as autonomy, prestige, growth, and wealth. F urthermore, efforts to justify the preferred policy bring biases into strategists' decisionsbiases reflecting the influences of parochial interests and preconceptions, and those resulting from attempts to simplify unduly their analytical tasks. The frightening lesson here is that doctrines can be destabilizing even when weapons are not, because doctrine may be more responsive to the organizational needs of the military than to the implications ofthe prevailing weapons technology. By examining the historical failure of offensive doctrine, Jack Snyder makes a valuable contribution to the literature on the causes of war." (from the dj). Contents : Preface. 1. Illustrated with 47 b&w photos in the text. 8vo, brown cloth, gilt letteri ng to spine. "The story of Frank Sobey's remarkable rise from boy butcher of Pictou County to big-league tycoon whose name commands respect in financial circles across Canada is an absorbing tale of ambition and loyalty that will fascinate all readers interested in the history of Canadian business and entrepreneurship" - rear panel of the dj. "In 1912, Frank Sobey's fatheropened a butcher shop in the mining town of Stellarton, Nova Scotia, from which he peddled meat door to door in a horse-drawn wagon. This store, Sobey's Number One, was the first in what was to become, under Frank Sobey's direction, a major food distribution business with operations in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario. The story of Frank Sobey is that of a classic Canadian entrepreneur whose tenacity, determination, and shrewdness overcame every obstacle - and there were many in the path of the Pictou County dropout who sought to compete with giants like Dominion Stores and Loblaws. Whether it was the small-town skirmish over the ownership of the Jubilee Theatreor the intricate manoeuvres of the battle for control of M. Loeb, Ltd., fo od-wholesaling giant, Frank Sobey's negotiating skill and drive to win havemade him a legend in the Canadian corporate community. Were Sobey's Stores his sole achievement, Frank Sobey's success would be remarkable, but he we nt on to use his acumen and ambition to build Empire Company Limited, the huge investment umbrella for myriad Sobey operating companies, with interests in drug stores, movie theatres, insurance, car-rental franchises, and real estate. At the same time, he pursued a path of dedicated public service, acting as mayor of Stellarton for twenty-two years, and for twelve years asthe first president of Industrial Estates Limited, the country's most inno vative development agency, which brought important major industries like Mlichelin and Volvo to Nova Scotia, and earned Frank Sobey many national honours. Frank Sobey: The Man and the Empire - reveals the strategies and management philosophy Frank Sobey used to keep his profitable business machine running and to ensure its continuation and relentless expansion under a dynasty that now extends over generations of Sobeys. It is a dramatic story involving powerful figures in the Canadian investment community and complex multi million-dollar deals, told against the backdrop of Frank Sobey's fierceloyalty to his family and to his unique corner of Canada." - dj flaps.
