52923 STAVROU, Theofanis George, (ed.) FANGER, Donald Art and Culture in Nineteenth-Century Russia. First Edition in dustjacket
Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 1983, ISBN:0253310512
STAVROU, Theofanis George, (ed.). Art and Culture in Nineteenth-Century Russia. Bloomington : Indiana University Press, (1983). First Printing. Pp (4),v-xix,(3),3-268,+ 48 pp plates. Index. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Result of two scholary projects, a lecture series and a symposium, which were held at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1978... orga nized by the University of Minnesota Gallery with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and the Mnistry of Culture of the USSR. "In terms of cultural achievements, the nineteenth century was Russia's golden age, when increased literacy and heightened national consciousness combined to spur the growth of high culture. This rich collection of thirteen original essays byleading scholars delves into the relationship of Russian culture to societ y, circa 1775 - 1885. Four essays in Part I treat the broad perspective of nineteenth-century Russian culture through the prism of significant issues such as the nature and role of the Russian intelligentsia (Nicholas Riasanovsky); the rise and role of the cities, especially Moscow and St. Petersburg, as cultural symbols (Sidney Monas); the "Rus-sianness" of the nineteenth-century Russian novel (Donald Fanger); and achievements in the field of music, with special emphasis on the relationship between the rise of nationalconsciousness and the development of the native song (Malcolm Hamrick Brow n). Part II opens with S. Frederick Starr's seminal essay, "On Russian Art and Society, 1800 - 1850." Starr concludes that "the two aspects of Russianart of the first half of the nineteenth century that were to endure over t he following generations were, first, the rhetoric of civic spirit and, second, the reality of deep engagement with the major currents of West European art". The eight essays that follow variously elaborate on these themes. John E. Bowlt discusses the evolution of Russian art, which at different stages reflected both Western and Eastern influences until it accomplished itsown synthesis by the end of the century. Joshua Taylor describes the conta cts of Russian painters with Europe, especially Italy, where they went for training and in "pursuit of light"; and Elizabeth Kridl Val-kenier analyzesthe attitude of the Russian intelligentsia toward art. The architectural t aste of nineteenth-century Russia as revealed in the buildings of Moscow and St. Petersburg is examined by Albert Schmidt. Janet Kennedy and Paul Schaffer, respectively, consider sculpture and the decorative arts. The growth of graphic arts in Russia, especially caricature, is outlined by John E. Bowlt. The volume concludes with Alison Hilton's essay on "Russian Folk Art and "High" Art in the Early Nineteenth Century". Art historians and studentsof Russian history and culture will applaud the wealth of information conv eniently brought together in this illustrated volume." (from the dj). Contents : Part One - Russian Culture. 1. Notes on the emergence and nature of the Russian intelligentsia (by Nicholas Riasanovsky). 2. St. Petersburg and Moscow as cultural symbols (by Sidney Monas). 3. On the Russianness of the Russian nineteenth-century novel (by Donald Fanger). 4. 52929 STEAD, Philip John Police of Britain. First Edition in dustjacket
Macmillan Publishing Company / Collier Macmillan Publishers, New York / London, 1985, ISBN:0029307600
STEAD, Philip John. The Police of Britain. New York : Macmillan Publishing Company / London : Collier Macmillan Publishers, (1985). First Printing. Pp(6),vii-xiv,(2),1-185,(7). Map. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "For centuries, horrified by the centralized militaristic police force of Europe, the British opposed every effort to install a professional police force, preferring instead the unpaid constabulary of ordinary citizens who had tended England's laws for 500 years. Only the extraordinary lawlessness of 18th- and early 19th-century London led the British reluctantly to acceptthe first disciplined, uniformed police force in 1829. The tension between popular fears of police power and society's need for effective police prot ection runs throughout The Police of Britain. In this comprehensive historyand contemporary survey of law enforcement in the United Kingdom, Philip J ohn Stead examines the impact of Britain's Common Law tradition on the development of its crime-fighting forces. As the author shows, the police of Britain are unique, anomalous, and very much a reflection of the society theyserve. From the "hundredmen" and "reeves" of Saxon England—precursors to t he constables and sheriffs of the Norman kings—to the modern bobbv and the detectives of Scotland Yard, The Police of Britain presents the people, events, and social conditions that have shaped police history in the British Isles. By the 18th centurv it was clear to many that something had to be done about the police. Crime itself had become more professional, and nonprofessional constables, watchmen, and justices of the peace could not cope witnthe vice, thievery, violence, and social unrest of the London slums. Enter the reformers. The autnor introduces us to Thomas de Veil, one of the firs t crusading magistrates (though not a paragon of virtue himself); Henry Fielding, celebrated author of Tom Jones, who created London's first detectiveforce: The Bow Street Runners; his brother John Fielding, who established the first horse patrols; Patrick Colquhuon, the magistrate who cleaned up the Thames docks; and Robert Peel, whose Metropolitan Police Act of 1829 laid the basis of Britain's modern police force. The Police of Britain followsthe development of the police in successive social contexts: the Industria l Revolution, the declining Empire, the two world wars, the political protests of the 1960s; and it probes the significant social upheavals of Britishhistory from the shattering Gordon Riots of 1780 to the surprising 1981 di sorders in Brixton, Southall, and Toxteth, Liverpool. Philip John Stead shows how Bntain's Common Law tradition affects today's police (who are generally unarmed, seldom use handcuffs, and inevitably suffer more casualties incivil disturbances than do the rioters they attempt to suppress). He looks at how the police system relates to the criminal justice system; how Brita in's police compares with that of Europe and the United States; and the contributions Britain has made to worldwide policing (such as fingerprinting, a British invention). It's all part of the fascinating panorama of police history covered in this lucid, concise study.' (from the dj). Contents : 1. "David Elden, the boy "cow puncher," who becomes a millionaire real estate operator in the boom days ot the west, and goes "broke" with the collapse of the boom—is the central fiigure in a tale of humour, love, philosophy, faithful Western colour and intense dramatic interestsuch as is offered to the public only at rare intervals. It is a book to b e read and laughed over and cried over and then read again. Its very humanity grips you from the first sentence. The girls of the story—Irene Hardy, Edith Duncan, "Bert" Morrison — will delight and charm you. The unfolding oftheir attachment for cow-punching Dave Elden makes a tale refreshing, uniq ue, vital, inspiring. The closing chapters strike what is perhaps the highest patriotic note yet attained in Canadian literature. "The Cow Puncher" isthe novel of the year. And it is Canadian through and through; written by a Canadian, printed in Canada, and illustrated by the great Canadian artist, Arthur Heming." (from the dj). Robert James Campbell Stead (b. Ellen Bradford Stebbins (b. May 24, 1851, Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts - d. August 28, 1950, Boston), sometime of Watertown.

"Asked in 1936 for reminiscences of my sea-life to be read to the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, I offered instead to make extracts from the unpublished manuscript of my father's [John Bradford, b. November 27,1823, Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts - d. May 1, 1893, Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts] account of his Voyages, 1839 - 1874. These, in four installments, were read at the meetings of the Society in 1937. The first one was printed in the special Duxbury Tercentenary Supplement, July 1, 1937, of the "Old Colony Memorial" of Plymouth.

In response to a renewed request, the following pages were written in 1938. As supplementary to my father's, they contain no unnecessary repetition, while naturally stressing the ties that bound us both to Duxbury. For printing serially in the "Old Colony Memorial," Part I was abridged and slightly modified after being read before the Society. Now, in their present form, they are only a Iong letter to distant friends. E.B.S. West Roxbury, March, 1939." - the Foreword.

52957 STECKLEY, John L. White Lies about the Inuit.
Broadview Press, Peterborough, Ontario, 2007, ISBN:9781551118758
STECKLEY, John L. White Lies about the Inuit. (Peterborough, Ontario) : Broadview Press, (2007). Pp [1]-168. Index. 8vo, illustrated black card covers. "The Inuit are a familiar part of Canadian identity but also exotic residing in the remote Arctic. The mix of the familiar and the exotic has resulted in the creation and perpetuation of a number of "White Lies." These are stories that have been developed over long periods of time, reproduced in classrooms, anthropology and sociology textbooks, and other media, but have been rarely challenged, contributing to misunderstandings that have ultimately, in subtle ways, diminished the stature of Inuit traditional culture. In this lively book, designed specifically for introductory students, Steckley unpacks three "White Lies" - the myth that there are fifty-two words forsnow, that there are blond, blue-eyed Inuit descended from the Vikings, an d that the Inuit send off their elders to die on ice floes. Debunking thesepopular myths allows him to illustrate how knowledge is shaped by Western social science, particularly the anthropology of the "Other," and that it can be flawed. In the process, students learn not only about Inuit culture, but about the difference between popular and scholarly research." - from the back cover. Very good. 20.00

"This is the stirring and magnificent account by her skipper of the United States nuclear submarine Seadragon's epochal exploration under the ice of the fabled Northwest Passage. [...] On the voyage itself there is the tension and excitement when the Seadragon becomes the first submarine to pass under an iceberg and chart its underwater contours; the thrill of finding a usable Northwest Passage through the Barrow Strait, an area for which the charts were so inaccurate taht the men of the Seadragon had to grope through using soundings, special sonars, and a 141-year-old journal; the tension of the moment when three of the Seadragon's crew were marooned on the ice when the sub was unable to resurface in the opening to pick them up; the hilarious -- and now famous -- baseball game at the North Pole; the Seadragon's close brushes with disaster beneath the Arctic ice pack." - from the dj.

Pp [1]-160. 8vo (152 x 228 mm), photo-illustrated greenish-brown card covers, with brown & white lettering to spine. Gerald 'Gerry ' Joseph Steele (b. January 30, 1933, Miscouche, P.E.I. - d. August 10, 2015,Charlottetown ) was living in Charlottetown at the time of publication. "I n an era when Prince Edward Islanders divided themselves along strict religious and cultural lines, an Acadian, Veronica Julie DesRoches, did the unmentionable: she married into a Scottish family. Set in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island, during the Depression and Second World War, Growing Up With Julie is a candid and powerful memoir of Gerry Steele's childhood in a Catholic family burdened by extreme poverty, alcohol, and cultural tensions between Acadians and Scots. At the head of the family is Steele’s grandmother, a woman unwavering in her beliefs — regardless of their merit, validity, or tendency to offend. But the heroine of the story is Steele’s Acadian mother,a quiet woman resigned to her own isolation and exclusion, but determined to help her children escape. Gifted with a memory for detail, Steele has written an unforgettable, unsentimental story that moves seamlessly through both despair and humour, and finally toward forgiveness and hope." - from the back cover. STEELE, Harwood. The Red Serge : Stories of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Toronto : The Ryerson Press, (1961). First Edition. Pp (4),v-vii,(7),1-265,(1). 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Arora, Saskatchewan Bibliography 5432; Drew, Lawmen in Scarlet : An Annotated Guide to Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Print and Performance. p.112. "As a spinner of stories about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Harwood Steele has no peer. He writes with a real love of the Force and his work reflects his intimate knowledge and close association with the R.C.M.P. Moreover he has a happy faculty for blending high adventure with accurate historical backgrounds, thus giving his tales a ring of authenticity that heightens their excitement and adds to their interest. The sixteen stories in this book cover the full period during which the Mounties have played such an important role in Canadian law enforcement. They range from colourful tales of the old West to events of the present day. Featured in these yarns are western "bad men," mean traders, prairie fires, polar bear hunts, dangerous bandits, foryune hunters, police service dogs, bush pilots, lonely Force wives, madmen and even weird creatures like Ogo-Pogo - the monster. Colonel Steele's graphic descriptions, careful characterizations and thrilling plots make these stories outstanding— whether this book is read quickly to find out what peak of excitement will be reached on the next page - or savoured slowly, one story at a time. Either way the reader will be moved and enthralled. And he will turn tne last page with a regard for the men who have created the enviable reputation enjoyed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." (from the dj). For?Harwood Steele's stories are true to the spirit of the Force,?and the tales he tells are honest reflections of the Force's?traditions. 52992 STEEVES, Dan. MacGIBBON, Lynda. BLACKWOOD, David, foreword. Bone Fields. in dj
Distributed by Goose Lane & General., 1993,
STEEVES, Dan. The Bone Fields. With Text by Lynda MacGibbon. N.pl.: Published by the Author, (1993). Distributed by Goose Lane & General. Pp (4),v-xi,12-[56]. Illustrated. Sm 4to, black cloth. Foreword by David Blackwood. Limited to 1000 copies. Dan Steeves was born in Riverview, New Brunswick. Lynda MacGibbon was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. "Dan Steeves's engravings are devotional images of a period in Maritime Canada when life appeared simpler. Yet in the rich handling of shadows in his prints, Steeves tells us that choice is a tenebrous burden in the privacy of the soul. Brief stories written by Lynda MacGibbon from conversations with Dan Steeves accompanythe prints. Their conciseness forcefully conveys the narrative quality of Steeves's imagery. The prints and stories deal with several generations of a family living in Middle Coverdale, New Brunswick, throughout the twentieth century, but Steeves and MacGibbon lift their meaning beyond the particularities of family and place to point to an immutable essence. An intensely private expression of faith, Steeves's art calls us to find significance inthe world and the people around us." - from the dustjacket. Very good in d ustjacket. 15.00
