TREVELYAN, Mary. I'll Walk Beside You : Letters from Belgium : September 1944 – May 1945. London, New York, Toronto : Longmans, Green and Co., (1946).First Edition. Pp [1]-111,(1), frontis + 8 p plates. Small 8vo, green clot h, maroon lettering to front board and spine. “This book consists of seventeen letters written from Brussels between September 1944 and May 1945. MissTrevelyan went out to the B.L.A., for the Y.M.C.A., as a " programme " spe cialist and became Programme Director of the largest Y.M.C.A. Leave Hostel in Brussels for the front-line troops. During the eight months she writes about, over 50,000 men came to the Hotel Albert (one of the peace-time luxury hotels in Brussels), each staying for 48 hours. They came straight from the front and bitter fighting, and returned again to the slit trenches, the intense cold, the horrors of modern warfare, after their short rest. The first three letters give a vivid account of a journey by Convoy (the last convoy, incidentally to land on the famous Normandy Beaches) through the areasof northern France so recently devastated by the rapid retreat of the Germ ans in the face of our invasion. About half of the letters describe our fighting troops and few people have had her unique opportunity of meeting withso many of our men from every part of the British Isles. These letters sho uld be of particular interest to all those whose relatives have fought withthe B.L.A. and who are how coming home, for they give a real picture of th e courage and endurance of the British troops at the climax of the war in Europe. But the letters are not only about the troops. Miss Trevelyan has made good use of months spent in Belgium and gives first-hand accounts of thepost-occupation problems of that country as she saw them during the winter after the Germans had gone.” - from the dj. TREW, Antony. Death of a Supertanker. London : Collins, 1978. First Printing. Pp (6),7-220,(4). 8vo, grey cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Well known novelist Antony Trew has written this suspense tale of sabotage on the high seas. Who was able to meticulously plan and execute the "accidental" demiseof one of the world's monster tankers? The deck of Ocean Mammoth stretched nearly a fifth of a mile from bridge to bows; its superstructure rose abov e the water-line to the height of a ten story building; loaded it displaced320,000 tons; it was among the latest and finest of the monster tankers th at swarm in ever increasing numbers across the oceans; yet in a time of falling freight rates and dwindling cargoes it had no useful part to play. It had to die. But the death of a supertanker is not easily contrived if it must appear to have been an accident. The conspiracy to take Ocean Mammoth toher doom involved meticulous planning and ruthless execution. The question of responsibility remained unanswered until the final stages of the Court of Inquiry, when the truth emerges in a moment of sudden drama. Cocked, else vg in price clipped dj. 15.00

TREWIN, J.C., (ed.). The House of Special Purpose : An Intimate Portrait ofthe Last Days of the Russian Imperial Family compiled from the papers of t heir English Tutor Charles Sydney Gibbes. New York : Stein and Day Publishers, (1975). First Edition. Pp [1]-148. Illustrated. Large 8vo, tan cloth, gilt lettering to spine, gilt crest to front board. “One summer day in 1908,Alexandra, the last Empress of all the Russias, was told by her cousin, Ed ward VII, King of Britain, that her four daughters had atrocious accents when speaking English. This wouldn't do for great-granddaughters of Queen Victoria. And so the Empress sought out an English tutor, Charles Gibbes, who joined the Imperial Family to teach English to the young Grand Duchesses and the Tsarevitch, the frail boy who was to be the next Emperor. When the Imperial Family was taken captive by the revolutionaries, Charles Gibbes shared their exile, all the while recording what he saw in his notebooks and taking hundreds of photographs. We know what happened with the family was moved to the House of Special Purpose in Ekaterinburg, where they were robbed of their prerogatives, their privacy, and finally all human dignity by their vengeful peasant guards. It was in the basement of the House of Special Purpose that they were all murdered, Nicholas and Alexandra, their five children, and their former servants. Charles Gibbes was present when the remains of the family were unearthed at the mine in Ekaterinburg and helped with the identification of the bodies of the family he had grown to love. The numerous, moving photographs in this book have never been published before. It is chilling to scan them and to read, finally, an eyewitness's description of the last years and days of the Romanovs.” (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 30.00

(10),[xi]-xx,(2),1-154. 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. A volume in the European Perspectives series. "What happens when the synthesis of Eros and Poiesis implicit in classical Platonic philosophy breaks down?' asks Eugenio Trías in Part I of 'The Artist and the City'. 'What happens when Soul and City stop being interconnected, dialectical orders, instead becoming separate, autonomous realms? When does the artist, the individual who is simultaneously erotic and poietic, cease relating to society and the city, that is, to his natural space and habitat? When does the City, an object that results from the artist's erotic creativity, establish itself as an order apart from Beauty and Art, subject to the naked principle of productivity unmeditated by an eroticism at all? These questions indicate the kind of issues that turn up consciously and deliberately in the course of this work... they set the search moving toward the undefined relationship between the Artist and the City'." - from the dust jacket. Contents: Part I: From Plato to Pico della Mirandola: 1. Plato: Creativity and Desire; 2. Plato: The Artist and the City; 3. Pico della Mirandola: Manin Proteus's Likeness. 55859 TRIGGER, Bruce G. Natives and Newcomers : Canada's Heroic Age Reconsidered. 3rd printing, hardcover in dustjacket
McGill-Queen's University Press, 1987, ISBN:0773505946
TRIGGER, Bruce G. Natives and Newcomers : Canada's "Heroic Age" Reconsidered. Kingston & Montreal: McGill-Queen's University Press, (1987). Third Printing. Pp. (10),[xi]-xiii,(1),[1]-430,(2). Illustrated. 8vo, tan cloth, gilttitles to spine. Bruce Graham Trigger, OC, OQ, FRSC (b. June 18, 1937, Pre ston, Ontario – d. December 1, 2006, Montreal) was a Canadian archaeologist, anthropologist, and ethnohistorian. "According to conventional nineteenth-century wisdom, societies of European origin were naturally progressive; native societies were static. One consequence of this attitude was the almost universal separation of history and anthropology. Today, despite a growing interest in changes in Amerindian societies, this dichotomy continues to distort the investigation of Canadian history and to assign native peoples only a marginal place in it. 'Natives and Newcomers' discredits that myth. In a spirited and critical re-examination of relations between the French and the Iroquoian-speaking inhabitants of the St. Lawrence lowlands, from the incursions of Jacques Cartier through the explorations of Samuel de Champlain and the Jesuit missions into the early years of the royal regime, 'Natives and Newcomers' argues that native people have played a significant role in shaping the development of Canada. Trigger also shows that the largelyignored French traders and their employees established relations with nati ve people that were indispensable for founding a viable European colony on the St. Lawrence. The brisk narrative of this period is complemented by a detailed survey of the stereotypes about native people that have influenced the development of Canadian history and anthropology and by candid discussions of how historical and, ethnographical, and archaeological approaches can and cannot be combined to produce a more rounded and accurate understanding of the past." - from the introductory abstract. Contents: Preface; 1. The Indian Image in Canadian History; 2. Before History; 3. The Approach of the Europeans, 1497-1600; 4. Traders and Colonizers, 1600-1632; 5. Plagues and Preachers, 1632-1663; 6. Who Founded New France? With notes, references and index.
