Shawn Comish (b. October 21, 1955, Halifax).

"This is a story of the Westray coal mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. In a miner's own words we are told of the atrocious conditions under which the miners worked. We hear about rock slides, cave-ins and explosively high levels of methane gas which if ignited would casuse the knee-high levels of coal dust to explode like a bomb. In addition to these dangers, we are told of an absence of sanitary conditions, places to eat and toilet facilities underground. The miners knew that a tragedy was coming; what they didn't know was how big. The Westray mine only operated for eight months before it was closed by a massive explosion on May 9th, 1992. Twenty-six men were trapped below; the author was one of the draegermen who attempted to rescue them." - from rear.
