Carol Bruneau (b. 1956, Halifax) was living Halifax at the time of publication.

"Sometimes it’s impossible to articulate the feeling of being trapped and the only thing to do is run away; this is the problem experienced by Willa Jackson. After a decade of marriage, the birth of one son, Alex, nine going on ten, a miscarriage, and a move to Halifax from Vancouver Island, Willa finds herself completely out-of-place, surrounded by seemingly happy wives at a military base in Halifax. Willa's hisband Charlie, who works aboard the Sea King helicopters, has no idea that WIlla is unhappy or unfulfilled. A good guy, he figures that looking after the child and the home is enough.

After a Forces New Year’s Eve party in 1986, Willa becomes fascinated with the saxophone player from the band. Hugh, the sax player, is also the lightkeeper on an island in the middle of Halifax Harbour; he is everything her husband is not. When Charlie is sent on a mission, Willa takes Alex and moves onto the island and into the dwelling adjacent to the lighthouse.

It is here that the reality of keeping an affair alive confronts Willa. Her son does not like Hugh and the dislike is reciprocated. No better at communication than her husband, Hugh harbours a number of secrets. The island, which appears from the shore to be a paradise, has been a dumping ground for the military for centuries. Even the mystic allure of the lighthouse is shattered when Willa discovers that the mercury used in its operation is contaminating house and home.

Carol Bruneau's beautifully written novel, Berth, takes the reaqder into the soul of a woman searching for a better life; a woman who discovers that her idealism about love and landscape will survive - despite its violent clashes with the forces of nature and self-deception. " - from the dj.
