NIVEN, Laird. Birchtown Archaeological Survey (1993) : The Black Loyalist Settlement of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Lockeport, N.S.: Roseway Publishing Company, 1994. Pp (4),i-vi,1-78. Illustrated. Maps. 4to, illustrated blue card covers. Abstract : "The aim of this survey was to record and preserve the historic resources associated with the original Black Loyalist settlement of Birchtown, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. The survey succeeded in identifying 20 features, ranging from shallow depressions to largestone cellars, dating from the last quarter of the 18th to the 20th centur ies. Large stone walls were noted throughout the study area as well as two wall complexes of uncertain function. It was concluded that the area is rich in archaeological resources which are under-studied, not very visible, and, therefore, very fragile. It is important to continue work in this area in order to preserve the Black heritage sites of Shelburne County and to educate the public about the historical contribution of Black Nova Scotians. The data gathered will contribute to the growing database of Nova Scotia's Black heritage and will be of use to scholars both in Canada and the United States." A small amount of highlighting in pink, else very good. 30.00
