Contents : Part 1 – Canada; Part 2 – Florida; Part 3 – Mexico. "André Thevet was one of the most widely travelledFrenchmen of the sixteenth century, visiting almost all the main countries and regions of western Europe, the Near East, and Brazil. He served four c onsecutive French kings, beginning with Henry II, as Royal Cosmographer and"garde des singularitez." As cosmographer, he wrote three major books deal ing with the discovery and subsequent exploration of the New World: Les Singularitez de la France antarctique (1556), La Cosmographie universelle (1575), and the Grand Insulaire (unpublished, 1586). Although the portions of these works devoted to South America have received considerable attention from scholars, Thevet's work on North America has remained inaccessible to students of the Age of Discovery. Professors Schlesinger and Stabler have nowadded Thevet to the list of enjoyable books by early European explorers of North America. Although credulous, egotistical, and something of a liar, T hevet provides a fascinating record of the period and an invaluable perspective on the events and opinions of the time. As the editors point out, muchof his information may have come from conversations with Jacques Cartier, Sebastian Cabot, and the Sieur de Roberval. Much of Thevet's work on North America, including Mexico, is translated here into English for the first time. The material is drawn from rare sixteenth-century printed books and from previously unpublished manuscripts; Le Grand Insulaire et pilotage d'André Thevet angoumoisin is published in this volume both in its original French and in translation." from the dj.
