As a young man of 26 years he emigrated to Baltimore, U.S.A. And in 1773 he joined the British Army in New York. [...] Following the end of the war [...] the officers and men of the 2nd Battalion of the 84th Regiment of Foot, under the command of Colonel John Small received a grant in Central Nova Scotia. The grant consisting of105,000 acres stretched from Nine Mile River to Noel Shore, and became kno wn as Douglas Township.” (p. 1).
