B-GL-309-006/FT-001. “This book may better be described as a training aid, the purpose of which is to createa mental image of company groups/combat teams in "defensive operations. It is designed to assist in the training of officers and men who have not the experience of operating within an all arms team. The literary technique us ed is an illustrated narrative of battle scenarios dealing in chronologicalorder with the successive phases of a Battle Group's approach to and invol vement in mobile defence against a Soviet Tank Division in the European setting, the summer circa 1984. Although the activities of higher formations and units are described, the narrative focuses mainly upon the Combat Team. At that level, the story involves key individuals and tactical groups (bothfriend and foe) describing the parts they play and the way they interact a s confrontation ensues. It is this interaction which forms the basis for the departure from the highly-stylized format which characterizes our tactical doctrine publications. While the plot line is based on fact, the characters and incidents are all fictitious.” (p. 3).
