MERTON, Thomas). MEATYARD, Ralph Eugene. Father Louie : Photographs of Thomas Merton. With an Essay by Guy Davenport. Edited by Barry Magid. (New York) : Timken Publishers, (1991). First Edition. Pp (4),5-103,(5). Illustratedin Black-and-White. Square large 8vo, illustrated grey card covers. "On a cold day in January 1967, photographer Gene Meatyard went with Guy Davenport and Jonathan Williams to visit Thomas Merton at Our Lady of Gethsemani, the Trappist monastery near Bardstown, Kentucky. The encounter was an enormous success and the beginning of a strong friendship between Meatyard and Merton. During the next two years there were numerous visits and Meatyard made a great many photographs of Merton. Fifty of these photographs have been selected and printed by Meatyard's son, Christopher, specifically for this book. Guy Davenport has written a lively and moving essay that captures both protagonists, each of whom he knew well. [...] In addition to the photographs and the essay, there is an introduction by Barry Magid, who conceived the project, as well as a previously unpublished reminiscence of Merton by Meatyard and the eulogy he wrote for a local newspaper. The book also contains the written correspondence between the two men. Christopher Meatyard has provided an informative note about his father's photographs that illuminates many details in the images." (from the back cover). Very good. 40.00
