Baker, who traditionally was involved in the "designing of modern cargo ships, passenger ships, and tankers as a naval architect employed by a large shipbuilding company" embarked on the project as a "busman's holiday", spending the better oart of six years' worth of spare time in preparing, outfitting, and testing the vessel, before its maiden launch on April 16th, 1957.
