TILDEN, Samuel J. New York State Finances and Canals : Speech of Hon. Samuel J. Tilden in the Constitutional Convention, on the 11th Sept., 1867. N.pl.: n.pub., (1867). Pp [1]-38,(2). 8vo, printed wraps, stitched. The speech deals mainly with the Erie Canal. With tables showing Monthly Averages of Freights, per Bushel, by year for 1858-1859 and 1861-1866. Samuel Jones Tilden (February 9, 1814–August 4, 1886) was a political reformer, the 25th governor of the State of New York, and, running as a Democrat, was the loser in the controversial 1876 presidential election. As a fighter against corruption, Tilden's speech may be seen as a precursor to his later battle with the Tweed Ring. Wrappers browned, surface tears to bottom margin of front cover, tears to spine ends, else good. Signed by the author - “With compliments of S.J. Tilden.” 50.00
