Antonio de Fierro Blanco was a pseudonymof Walter Nordhoff (1855—1937), who had a mining engineering degree from Y ale, and worked as a European correspondent for the New York Herald before moving west to manage fifty thousand acres of his father’s land in Baja California, the area that inspired The Journey of the Flame. "The Journey of 'The Flame' is the story told by Don Juan Obrigon, feudal lord of Old Mexico, on his hundredth birthday to his assembled guests. He tells how, as a boyof twelve, he joined the train of the Spanish Inspector-General, Don Firmi n Sanhudo, in his perilous tour of the provinces from tne southern tip of Lower California to San Francisco. Spain then, in 1810, had a precarious hold on her Colonies, and it was the business of Sanhudo to inquire into conditions, and to inspect the Misssiosns. The journey was one long adventure. Thruugn almost impossible deserts, over precipitous mountains, among hostileand bloodthirsty tribes, through valleys of flowers, thye train of mules, soldiers, servants, and camp-followers made its slow way. The scenes ana cnaracters in the cavalcade are exciting in themselves, but the story is spiced with numerous anecdotes and reflections on life, given with considerablewit and point by the old man. The author is steeped in knowledge of the co untry and period of which he writes, and of the folklore, legends, tradition and superstitions of the Indians. He has contrived a gorgeously coloured, thrilling, and unusual story, and a stirring description of savage feudal life in Spanish America—a land where human life was not of great value (except possibly to the owner), and wnere every man carried two knives." (Abstract). Cocked, cloth rubbed and darkened, rear inner hinge cracked, name, else good. Uncommon British edition. 30.00
