A novel of Nova Scotia by Hilda Kay Grant, a native of Yarmouth.
The town in the novel is named Inverness.
Chapter Two begins at the Glengarry Golf and Country Club which overlooks the Gut.

"This is a quiet, small-town comedy about life in a Nova Scotia community, with a nice galley of eccentric characters, some gentle irony, and really craftsmanlike construction. One of our readers has said, 'It is beguiling as an Alec Guiness film.' ".

The two nicely joined plots have to do with the struggle for social ascendancy between Simon Ward and his neighbor, two of the town's oldest inhabitants, and the attempt of Simon's daughter, who has had an unfortunate marriage, to work out a satisfactory relationship with 'the right young man.'

There are minor plots including the desperate search for a husband on the part of Simon's other daughter, the desire for independence and social prestige on the part of his sister-in-law who lives with them, and the love-affair of the house-keeper's daughter.

All characters - major and minor - are skillfully drawn and command the reader's interest, as well as his sympathy or, in some cases, his amusement." - from the dj.
