This is the second of three novels written by Richard Cumberland (b. February 9, 1732, Cambridge - d. May 7, 1811, London), English playwright, novelist and civil servant. In his day job, he came the private secretary of Lord Halifax which in turn led him to be appointed crown agent for Nova Scotia, some ten years after the founding of the city named to honour his patron Chapter headings include: "An humble Apology for Authors in general, withsome modest Hints at their peculiar Uselessness"; "Let Innocence Beware! S pring-guns and Man-traps are laid in these Premises!"; "An Adventure on board a Frigate"; "Our Wounded Hero bleeds afresh"; Two of the volumes have the very attractive advertizing bookplate of "Thiselton, Bookseller and Stationer, At his Circulating Library, Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road".
