Illustrated. 4to, pale blue card covers. “Peter Chance was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1920, to English parents who had emigrated to Canada prior to WWI, where he completed his education. With a desire for a career at sea, he joinedthe Ottawa Division, Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Following the outbreak of war in September 1939, his first ship appointment was to HMCS St. Laurent which formed part of the escort for the initial UK bound Convoy, HXI, which sailed from Halifax on the 15th September. Having transferred to the Regular Force and following three years of training ashore and afloat in the Royal Navy, he returned to serve in ten more ships, either as a specialist in Navigation and Aircraft Control or in Command. His experience also included ten staff appointments in shore establishments, including the Naval Headquarters in Ottawa. On retirement in the rank of Commander in 1970, he enjoyed five years at Osqoode Hall Law School as it's first ExecutiveOfficer. On return to the West Coast in 1974, lured by a failed prospect o f a similar job at the University of Victoria, he became active in a numberof naval and naval organizations for the past twenty five years, including the Naval Officers Association of Canada and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme.” - from the back cover.
