"The large and important collection of manuscript materials relating to the American Indian. in the Library of the American Philosophical Society, stems from the interest of Thomas Jefferson, President of the Society, 1797-1814, in the customs of Indian tribes and in their languages, whose study he specifically encouraged. Another president, Stephen S. Du Ponceau, stimulated the collection of materials on Indian linguistics begun in 1819. Various donors further enlarged the collection, notably Joel Poinsett, U. S. Minister to Mexico, 1825-1830. With the aid of a fund given by Henry Phillips, Jr., Librarian, 1885-1895, growth of the collection continued. In 1946 the Library reveived the papers of the distinguished anthropologist Franz Boas and his since acquired similar professional records of other anthropologists and ethnologists. The resulting body of manuscripts and microfilms now amounts to about 50,000 items in 300 separate collections, all of them catalogued, and many analyzed." (from the dj).
