James Anthony 'Tony' Foster (b.August 3, 1932, Winnipeg - d. May 19, 2012, Nova Scotia) . "June 7,1944—th e day after the Normandy landings. Twenty thousand, five hundred strong, the 12th Waffen-ss Hitler Youth Division marched into battle against Canadianand British forces. They were the last cream of German youth, seventeen- a nd eighteen-year-old lads trained and led by a cadre of battle- hardened officers and NCOs who had survived four years of war in Europe and on the Russian front. With only a year of training, they were nevertheless ferocious fighters. At one critical point in the battle for Normandy the depleted 12th ss Division fought three Canadian and three British divisions to a standstill. Eighty-five days after the Normandy landings, at the Battle of the Falaise Gap, less than five hundred of the 12th Division's front-line troops remained. The rest were dead or ounded or had been captured. The unit's commanding officer, Major-Generai Kurt Meyer. at thirty-three the youngest general in the German armed forces, was subsequently charged as a war criminalfor the murders of forty-three Canadian soldiers by troops under his comma nd. A military courtmartial convened at Aurich, Germany, ln December 1945, presided over by Major-General Harry Foster, who had commanded the murderedmen. After a two-week trial, Meyer was convicted and sentenced to death al though no evidence came to light to prove that he had ordered the killings.Meeting of Generals is the study of a terrible war viewed from the two sid es of a battlefield on which different moral and political ideologies struggled to prevail. Parallel biographies trace Meyer's and Foster's careers—their youth, their ambitions, their sweethearts, their sorrows and personal tragedies — and show how each reflected the values of the nation that he served. In the end, both generals realized that in war there are no winners orlosers—only victims. Based on the personal diaries and memories of Meyer a nd Foster, much unpublished material, trial transcripts, and scores of interviews conducted throughout Canada and Western Europe during a five-year period, Meeting of Generals provides a uniquely dispassionate examination of the tragedy of men, women, and children on opposite sides in a war."
