(MAYNE, Roger). The Street Photographs of Roger Mayne. An Exhibition held in the Photo Gallery of the Henry Cole Wing from 26 February to 31 May 1986.(London) : Victoria and Albert Museum, (1986). Pp (4),5-88. Illustrated in black-and-white. 4to, illustrated white card covers, lettered in black. "R oger Mayne is one of Britain's major photographers and this is the most complete book of his work yet published. Born in Cambridge in 1929, Roger Mayne's great period was the 1950s and 60s. He photographed the street life of London and captured its vigour, colour and psychological complexity. This coincided with the London novels of Colin Maclnnes, one of the most eloquentchampions of Mayne's work. The book charts the early influences on Roger M ayne (Cartier-Bresson, Paul Strand and W. Eugene Smith), presents his earlyabstract hotographs - some of which form a homage to the St Ives School of painters - and features the subject he made his own: North Kensington, the streets of London's W.10. Mayne photographed in one street - Southam Stree t (now demolished) — for five years from 1956-61. This rich essay has no rivals in the history of photography and the photographs become more poignantand absorbing as each year passes. Mayne's heroes and heroines are the chi ldren of the later 1950s. The Museum's Curator of Photographs, Mark Haworth-Booth, contributes an essay which describes the Southam Street project andilluminates a chapter of British photographic history."
