(Le FANU, Michael, Admiral Sir). BAKER, Richard. Dry Ginger : The biographyof Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Michael Le Fanu, GCB, DSC. London : W.H. Alle n, 1977. First Edition. Pp (8),9-254,(2), portrait frontispiece + 24 pp of plates. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt to spine. Law 0711. "When rum was abolished in the Royal Navy in 1970, Sir Michael Le Fanu, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff at the time was given the nickname 'Dry Ginger', and Richard Baker has adopted it as the title of his biography of the Admiral. Apart from its relevance to the rum decision, the phrase neatly sums up a man whose red hair and ready wit gained him a unique reputation among sailors. He was in fact one of the most brilliant and unorthodox naval officers of his generation. 'Lef' first made his name as Gunnery Officer of the legendary wartime cruiser HMS Aurora and as Liaison Officer to the American Admirals Halsey and Spruance in the Pacific; thereafter his career proceeded by leaps and bounds until in 1970 at the age of fifty six he was poised to become Chief of the Defence Staff. What this direct and democratic man might have achieved in the country's top defence job will never be known, for he wasfound to be suffering from leukemia and before the year was over he was de ad - mourned by many thousands of friends, some of whom packed Westminster Abbey for his Memorial Service."
