Illustrated. 4to, tan cloth. "Histories of anatomy exist in sufficient quantity, so this essay revolves around two questions only: What havo artists done to record dissections andso help anatomists to see? And what, in turn, have anatomists discovered t o help artists in portraying man's body? These questions center on the everlasting preoccupation of Western art, which is the study of man. They are part of one question today when some artists and all doctors study anatomy for structure and action, but before the Renaissance anatomists and artists were aware of each other only in oddly indirect ways.' Thus Hyatt Mayor introduced his manuscript on "Artists & Anatomists." written about 1954 at theurging ol colleagues and friends after he had assembled an exhibition on t his subject. His essay, in twenty-three sections, is concerned with the interrelation of art and anatomy from ancient times to the present. The scope is broad, extending from antiquity through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and up to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with observations on the Far and Near East, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo,Raphael, Diirer, Berengario da Carpi, Vesalius, Rembrandt, Rodin, Eakins, Picasso, Tchelitchew and Dali, among others. There are some ninety illustrations of drawings, prints, sculptures and paintings." (from the dj).
