The craftsmen wereMoors living under Christian domination until they were exiled by Philip t he Third in 1609. The Mudéjares gave their name to a type of blind tooling made by working over dampened leather with cold metal tools. Beginning in the early 1400's with blind tooling drawn over heavy wooden boards, the examples in this Album continue through metallic ornamentation, through the embroidered and velvet covers with pendent lead seals of those distinctively Hispanic documents, cartas ejecutorias de hidalguia, down to the thin leathers of the present day. This Album based on exhibitins at the Society also includes unusual bindings from Portugal and far-off Peru. Since few articlesin English have appeared on this subject, a glossary of pertinent Spanish terms has been added." (from the dj).
