PRITCHARD, Gregory P. Collision at Sea. [Front cover adds: "The Little-Known Marine Tragedy Felt on Both Sides of the Atlantic"]. Foreword by D. Laurence Mawhinney. Hantsport : Lancelot Press, (1993). First Printing. Pp (3),4-178,(2). Illustrated. 8vo, blue and yellowish grey card covers. "This booktells for the first time the story of a little-known shipping disaster tha t occurred during World War II off the coast of Nova Scotia. Written by a former Merchant Navy Officer and priest of St. Barnabas' Church in Blue Rocks, the community most directly affected by the accident, it is a compassionate and fair account. A Lunenburg fishing schooner Flora Alberta [captainedby Guy Tanner[ collided with the British merchant ship Fanad Head [captain ed by T.M. Heddles] in heavy forg and 21 lives were lost. The night of the accident is dramatically reconstructed, with the suspense of a wartime convoy secretly crossing the ocean contrasted to the details of a fishing expedition, last of the season. We learn of last minute crew replacements, talesof badly needed income, good luck turning to bad and less-than-ideal worki ng conditions. The author conveys the suspense, terror, chaos and heroics of this dramatic event and then goes on to probe its far-reaching consequences -- including a heated trial, which left as many emotional scars as did the accident itself. Name, else very good. 10.00
