"In the late 1950s, the Pakistani city of Lahore had intercollegiate competitions that women could enter, with consolation prizes specially reserved for them. Was it, some asked, a gesture of chivalry or chauvinism on the part of the male dominated society? At one such contest, a young poet, still in her teens, told the audience in a quivering but fiery voice that she was there to compete with all candidates, male or female, on 'equal terms' rather than to collect charity. Her forthrightness and courage were heartily applauded. Three decades later, the teenager has become both a respected poet and a role model for many women in Pakistaa At 46 Kishawar Naheed continues to break new ground for Urdu literature and to fight, almost singlehandedly, to free her country-women from unreasonable restricts imposed on them in the name of Islam.
Much of Naheed's writing - both poetrv and prose - reflects her search for an identity for women and a relentless struggle to loosen their physical and spiritual shackles." - from the dj.
