The Bulletin of the Opposition was the voice of the Soviet Left Opposition, which was expelled from the Russian Communist Party in 1927 for opposing the political views of the bureaucracy led by Stalin. In its early years it contained a great deal of correspondence from the Soviet Union and was circulated underground in that country - much like the samizdat writings of today. Later, asthe Stalinist repression deepened and mere possession of the Bulletin coul d mean imprisonment or death, its circulation in the Soviet Union became extremely difficult. Because of the circumstances of its publication, extant issues are rare. Altogether, 87 numbers of the Bulletin were published. It was first printed in Paris until 1931; then in Berlin until January 1933, when the Nazis came to power and banned it; in Paris again, through February1934; Zurich until April 1935; in Paris a third time, until mid-1939; and in New York when World War II began, until 1941. Leon Trotsky was the editor and chief contributor to the Bulletin. considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of Russian prose in the twentieth century, he is represented here by a rich treasury of analysis and polemic on almost every important world event that occurred from 1929 to 1940. Many of Trotsky's articleswere written under pen names or carried no byline. A special feature of th is publication is its identification of every one of Trotsky's contributions.
