Sandor Voros, b. July 1, 19 00, Hungary; lived in Hamilton, ON, for a time. He was a member of the Communist Party of the United States of America, and fought in the Spanish Civil War as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. "'American Commissar' is the unembroidered story of one who left first for the political Right, thenfro teh Left. He came to know long before most of his contemporaries that Stalinism and modern Communishm have very little in common with the classicMarxist doctrine whose ideas of equality so inspired him and many of his f ellows in the Twenties and Thirties. Sandor Voros fought in his first revolution at eighteen, as a cadet in the Austro-Hnugarian Army, to uphold the constituttional authorty of the Hapsburg Monarchy when the populace rose in revolt to demand the end of the already lost First World War. He fought hissecond in the Depression-haunted, Communist-dominated Thirties across the rocky face of Spain wtih the International Brigades. And he returned, shocked and disillusioned, to his adopted country to resign his membership in the Communist Party and support the constitutional authority of the United States. In his ten years as a professional revolutionary and party organizer,Sandor Voros held a number of leading positions with the Communist Party. He served as editor and business manager of the Hungarian Communist Daily 'Uj Elore'; as head of the 'Daily Worker' Ohio bureau; as Ohio State Chairman of the Communist Party Electrion Campaign Committee; as edeitor of the Canadian 'Hungarian Worker'; was a frequent contributor to revolutionary and proletarian publications; served as a strike organizer; and was active in the formation of the Newspaper Guild." - from the dustjacket.
