The Jewish community grew into one of the largest, wealthiest, and most culturally fertile in Europe. In this first history of Jewish Odessa in any language, the author traces the rise of Odessa's Jewish community from the earliest days to the pogroms of 1881 that erupted after the assassination of Alexander II. The author emphasizes the acculturation of the Jewish community, describing changes in behavior, attitude, and ideology as reflected in its schools, synagogues, newspapers, and other instititutions. During the period covered, patterns were set that continued to affect the community's cultural development well into the second decade of the twentieth century.
