BURNE, Alfred H., Lieutenant-Colonel. The Agincourt War : A military history of the latter part of the Hundred Years War, 1369 to 1453. London and (Novato,) California : Greenhill Books ; Presidio Books, (1991). Pp. (14),11-359,(3). 8vo, green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Originally publishedin 1956. "The fragile peace between England and France established by trea ty in 1360 erupted once more into war in 1369. It raged with short periods of calm until 1453, the second part of the Hundred Years War, and it was asdominated by the Battle of Agincourt as the first part of the war had been by Crecy. Colonel Burne's earlier book, 'The Crecy War', described that fa mous conflict; in this exciting and readable successor, he recreates the years leading up to Agincourt and its bitter aftermath. In 1369 the military power and reputation of England, the author writes, were at their height. During the years of fighting that were to follow England's fortunes fluctuated greatly; hitherto Agincourt has tended to overshadow the other battles of the war, but now Colonel Burne has not only recaptured the spirit of Agincour itself, but has put the battle in perspective of the other important engagements less well known, such as the battles of Verneuil and Fresnay; Verneuil was spoken of as a 'second Agincourt'. As with the battles, so with its commanders. Henry V is known to all, but Colonel Burne gives rightful honour to Talbot, Salisbury, Bedford and Chandos, and many others. On the French side, he details the parts played by Betrand du Guesclin, and of course Joan of Arc." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1. The Duguesclin War (1369-96); 2. The Truce of 1396-1415; 3.
