Granville Hubert Nickerson, M.D. (b. 1922, Cape Sable Island, Shelburne County) was a surgeon lieutenant in the RCN.
“Dr. Nickerson, the little boy, remembers the historic waterfront of Liverpool, Nova Scotia as a place of wonders - the large dark sailing vessels with their huge white sails, yellow masts and booms, the colourful smaller motor boats, yachts of the wealthy, and other fascinating sailing ships. The brave and hardy fishermen wearing colourful costumes walking along the wharf appeared like giants from some distant land. Mr. John F. Seldon's store, "Marine Supplies" rivaled Dickens s Olde Curiosity Shop.
Dr. Nickerson recalls his father and his brothers and the origins of their prosperous fishing enterprise, Nickerson Bros., known internationally. He presents the personalities and character of his father and his uncles in amusing and moving anecdotes from their own boyhoods and their contribution to the fisheries. Their friends and associates - how they worked and relaxed together, are recalled in a most entertaining and unforgettable fashion. He presents the tragedy that followed "one hook, one fish" fishing and the rape of the ocean beds by the efficient "draggers". It all took place from the end of the nineteenth century to close to the end of the twentieth century. These unusual and brave men are nearly all gone. They must be remembered!” - from the dj.
