Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated blackcard covers, lettered in white. Limited to 600 copies. "The Balliol Roll i s the earliest known collection of Scottish coats-of-arms. It is painted onthe dorse of the last two membranes of Cooke's Ordinary and resides in the private collection of Dame Lilian Wagner, widow of the late Sir Anthony Wa gner, Garter King of Arms 1961-78, Clarenceux King of Arms 1978 - 95. It comprises thirty six coats-of-arms, commencing with the royal arms of Sir Edward Balliol, King of Scots. Thereafter follow two rows of seven straight-sided shields with ogival bases with the sinister half of each end shield on the right having been lost due to trimming. These depict the arms of thirteen Scottish earls together with those of the High Steward. Three rows of slightly smaller heater-shaped shields displaying the arms of the remaining earl (Mar 2) and twenty barons, actual or potential supporters of Balliol kingship in Scotland, complete the roll."
