(8),[ix]-xiv,[1]-169,(3). 8vo, brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Mohammad Amin Wakman, b. November 1, 1939, was Secretary General of the Afghan Social Democratic Party (Afghan Millat Party) at the time of publication (and is their current leader). "This study discusses Afghanistan's foreign policy against the background of Anglo-Russian rivalry in the region prior to the Second World War and Super Power competition and confrontation in its aftermath. Dr Wakman dsecribes how depsite itsrelatively small size, land-locked isolation and position, and cultural co nservatism, Afghanistan has been able to preserve its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty, withstand Great Power pressures, and adhereto a course of strict neutrality. This book highlights the factors which p rompted Afghan leaders to join the Non-aligned Movement and discusses in detail Afghanistan's role and contribution to the movement since its inception. The book examines the political changes in Afghanistan during 1978 as well as subsequent developments leading to the Soviet intervention in December 1979. Dr Wakman concludes that the independent and non-alignment status of Afghanistan has been eroded after the overthrow of the Daoud Government in April 1978 and the country's foreign policy shows a perceptible tilt towards the Soviet bloc -- a departure from its historical stance of neutrality. This book is useful for an understanding of current problems confronting the Indian subcontinent." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1. Determinants of Afghanistan's Foreign Policy; 2.
