A collection of the correspondences of Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis and his family, which sheds light on the contributions of the United Empire Loyalists in pre-confederation Ontario. "The reading of Biography and "letters" has now become a very populat pastime, and through it has come wider appreciation of the stories and romances hidden in the records of the great families of all countries. In our own country the influence of the United EmpireLoyalists in forming the character of the country is still felt, and The G raphic Publishers feel highly gratified that they can offer to Canadians this collection ot" letters of the Jarvis family. Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis, was a member of the Family Compact. He had memories of that long and tedious trip from New Brunswick to York in 1809. From 1827 to 1864 he was sheriff of the Home District of Upper Canada, a position that brought him into touch with prominent people from all parts of the province. In 1827 he married Mary Powell, granddaughter of the First Chief Justice of Upper Canada - thus uniting two of the most prominent of the Loyalist families. Their home "Rosedale" is now the fashionable residential district of Toronto. Thevarious members of the Jarvis family in their letters to and fro have give n us a clear picture of conditions physical, social, and political in our province. Spiced with a little gossip, and carefully " connected" by the author they form a most entertaining story and, we believe, a valuable contribution to Canadian historical knowledge."
